WWGPD? (XP from FB)

This is kind of a random post, but I'm looking for input. It's a little bit of an FFC, too.

One of my best friends asked me to watch 2 of her girls on a Saturday in a couple of weeks while she's at work. She always works Saturdays, but the girls are usually with their father on the weekend, so it's never an issue. I love them, and I really don't mind watching them for a few hours. They're 3 and 5 (almost 6).

But.

Her Saturday shifts are usually really long. Like 8 or 9 hours. And she lives an hour away from me. My entire Saturday would be spent getting up in the morning, driving to her house, watching the girls all day, and getting home after dinner. That's a really long day to give up.

Am I a bad friend for even needing to think about this? I feel like I should have just told her "absolutely yes" as soon as she asked instead of considering it (she's been separated for over a year, had to move in with her parents, finally got a job after being a SAHM while married, and really doesn't have the money to pay a babysitter). I guess I'm kind of selfish with my weekends (hence the FFC part).

Re: WWGPD? (XP from FB)

  • I don't think you're a bad friend. That's a huge time commitment. Do you think it's something that would become more frequent (like setting a precedent)? If it's truly a one and done I'd probably just help her out of the jam.

  • I don't think it would be setting a precedent. She doesn't ask very often if I can watch them, and they are almost always with their dad on the weekends (she wouldn't ask me to watch them during the week since I work).

  • If she's really in a jam, and you're really friends and not the mooching type I would definitely do it for her. Sounds like she has had a rough go of it, and could use some help.  You're still allowed to think it sucks.  Cause giving up your weekend days does totally suck.  But then hey, you should have some good Karma coming your way in the future :)

  • I'd definitely be disappointed losing my whole day off, but I'd do it anyway just like other ladies have said.

  • Thanks for the responses, gals!

I ended up asking if there was any way she could find anyone else to maybe split up the day. I just hit 3rd tri, and spending nearly 12 hours driving out to her house, watching 2 little girls, and driving home would sap me worse than my regular workdays do! She ended up asking her boyfriend, and he's going to watch them in the morning. I'll get there by 1 and watch them until she gets home shortly after 6.
