Hypothyroidism

I know several ladies here deal with this... I had my levels checked in January and everything was in the normal range, although the Free T4 was on the low side.  I'm going to get it checked again this Thursday because I've been having weird random dizziness/vertigo and foggy headedness, in addition to my cycles getting longer and longer each time.  Since getting off BC last June I had 6 normal cycles, then a 43 day one, then a 73 day one, and now I'm on day 81.

Anyway - I was talking to a coworker about it and she said that she had to go to an endocrinologist to get it diagnosed, and she had to have a different test besides hormone levels to show the issue.  Has anyone had a anti-TPO test done?  Is it just another blood test?  Doing some googling I saw that this usually shows Hashimoto's, which I know is the diagnosis my mother has.

Re: Hypothyroidism

  • Sorry, I have no experience with any of this, but I hope whatever testing you get done gives you the answers you need to get back to shorter cycles.

  • I have hashimotos. I've almost never taken my meds bc I don't feel symptoms the way some others do. I did take it while ttc in 2011 because it was suggested that I could have poor quality eggs without the meds. Looking back, I think in my case that was a load of crap, but to others it may be true so I can't knock the meds.

I did not/have not seen an endo. My sister does and her testing has been far more extensive and intrusive. I also think her case is more extreme than my own. They do blood work to check my levels and I get an ultrasound of my thyroid yearly. (My sister also has a yearly ultrasound and this past year it showed excessive growth so they had to go in and biopsy. She said it was an awful experience that she wishes she had been knocked out for. She was sore for a few days.)

I do know that it's common to be diagnosed with Graves' disease first and then hashimotos. This is because when the body starts recognizing a slowing thyroid it begins to overcompensate. Things like excessive weight loss are the result. Once the body realizes it can't be stopped it let's the thyroid slow, turning to hashimotos. It's not always the case but certainly can be. It took my body about six months for my levels to go from normal to treatable. I never had issues with my cycle, so I don't know if long cycles can be a sign of thyroid issues (only PCOS comes to mind for that and I'm sur you're well aware of that possibility).

  • I have hashimoto's. I don't believe I ever had the anti-TPO test done. My testing was nothing more than bloodwork and a couple of thyroid ultrasounds. Now I just get bloodwork rechecked yearly as long as my dosage is good.
