NBR: Cookware

My H and I are in the market to replace our middle grade seven year old nonstick cookware and are having trouble making a decision. I am not sure I want to get another nonstick set, but we have had it for so long that I don't have a good idea about how difficult it would be to switch to cooking in stainless or in ceramic. We would also like to get something that would last for 10+ years.

What do you use to cook with and would you recommend it? Are there any brands to recommend or stay away from?

Re: NBR: Cookware

  • We have this set.  We got the set as a wedding gift and they've held up great for the last 5 years.  I see them lasting at least another 5.  Whether or not they are high quality? I'm not really sure.  I do have a few cast iron pieces that I use too.

  • I don't know the brand of stainless steel cookware I have.  I've had it for years and it holds up well.
You do need oil to prevent sticking, but I'll take that trade off.
Every non stick cookware piece I've had starts flaking after a few years, and I'm not comfortable with that in my food.
I don't even like cooking with it when it's not flaking.  Teflon is going to be eliminated by next year anyway.
So, I'd recommend cast iron, which I love, or stainless steel.  I've never had a problem with any brand of either.
Though I'd love to try ceramic baking pans at some point.

  • I'm pretty sure we have the exact same set as @SnShne322.  We've been using them since we bought our house 6 years ago, and they're in great shape.  I can see them lasting a lot longer, but like she said, I really don't know if they're the best quality or whatever.  They have served our purposes just great, though.  I've always heard that All-Clad is the best.

Personally, I don't like cooking on nonstick pans, except my electric griddle for pancakes and eggs.  And I treat that thing like gold so I don't scratch the non-stick surface.  All the other non-stick pans I've had all ended up scratched and gross, and I'm sure I've eaten a fair amount of non-stick crap over the years before switching.  At least you can clean stainless with steel wool.

I also have a big enameled cast iron dutch oven that I adore.  It's my favorite thing to cook with.
  • We have this set.  I chose it because it was an affordable ceramic set and was a nice shiny color - I want something that's going to look nice - i.e. not have scorch marks like professional grade stainless steel.  I have a few le Creuset pieces and a few Lodge pieces, but these are my everyday go in the dishwasher cookware.

  • We are gradually moving over to cast iron.  It's great but I keep having to remind my husband to use a lower cooking temperature on the stove!
  • I plan to move over to cast iron and enameled cast iron.  I just like the way they cook and they last forever.  I'll probably end up with a stainless steel pan and a non stick pan but I want the majority to be cast iron.

  • We have this set that we got for a wedding present. I had been using a set of Kitchenaid non-stick, and I love the stainless so much better. I like that I can get a better sear on meat, and can pan roast veggies better. I have a non stick griddle pan that I use to fry eggs and make pancakes, and another non-stick that we use mostly for scrambled eggs.

  • Thanks for all of the advice, especially for the links! I think you gals have convinced us to try stainless and to pick up a separate nonstick for eggs and the like. I had forgotten about cast iron, which I have never cooked with before. Might be a great time to try a piece in that as well.

I'm surprised at how many cook every day with stainless. Doesn't stuff stick to it when you're cooking?

We usually cook every day with non-stick and save the stainless pans for special occasions, like pan roasting fish or something.

  • @MrsC7 I just use a tad bit of olive oil or Pam.  I have more problems with my cast iron than I do with the stainless as far as sticking goes.

  • Can anyone recommend a stainless pan like this? We use this pan the most at home and it's non stick.  This time around I'd like a stainless version.

@SnShne322 Do you care about raised grill marks on the bottom? All the SS (not non-stick) options I've seen have grill marks on the bottom.

I'd rather not have a grille pan, We use it a lot for eggs and pancakes.  I know we could use a skillet, but J LOVES this style pan.

Thanks for the BBB link, I'll check it out.

@SnShne322 I just saw that your exact All-Clad grill pan (unfortunately not stainless steel but the same non-stick) is on sale at Williams Sonoma for $60 (instead of usual $155). Plus I have a coupon for 20% off that I could share and they're offering free shipping right now.

Just some food for thought (hardy har har)

  • Thanks @MrsC7.  I'm really considering the ceramic one you linked. I've never had a ceramic pan, so I think I might try it!
