Law Office Interview: What to Wear?

I am interviewing Monday for a paralegal position at a small law office just outside Nashville. I am very fond of cheerful (but not obnoxious) dresses with pumps, but I'm on the fence as to whether it would be more beneficial to wear something more crisp and neutral-colored, like slacks or a pencil skirt with a button-down shirt.

Suggestions?

Re: Law Office Interview: What to Wear?

  • I'm a paralegal. Wear a suit.
  • I'm an attorney, and it can be a grind. All things being equal, I would definitely hire someone in a cheerful dress, especially if she has a cheery personality to match.

Wear a conservative business suit in black, navy, charcoal grey or if you must dark brown.  Save the cheerful dresses for after you get the job. Law is a VERY conservative field.  Nobody will fault you for dressing like a lawyer but too many might fault you for failing to dress like one.  Let your merits & your qualifications get you the job; don't let your wardrobe inadvertently overshadow those.
  • You can't go wrong with a professional suit for an interview at a law firm.  It will show that you take the job and your career seriously.  The lawyers may want to take a paralegal to court with them and will want to see that you can look court-appropriate.

  • Neutral Pencil skirt that fits appropriately with a crisp white blouse! However, is you do accessorise like a bracelet or necklace or shoes add a pop of colour!
