TMI Monday - Post loss AF

I'm going to apologize in advance for the TMI but I'm going to be that girl. Question for those of you who have had a loss - how heavy is too heavy for AF in the few cycles following loss? Prior to pg, I had 2 heavy days but would still be fine with a super tampon for almost 8 hours. Since our loss, I'm lucky if I can get 3 hours out of the same kind. I wasn't sure if it was concerning enough to call the dr or should I just suck it up and wait it out another cycle or two to see if things go back towards 'normal'?

I know that everyone is different and for some people, what I'm experiencing now is normal but I wasn't sure if I should be concerned about the change and/or the amount. Thanks ladies!

Re: TMI Monday - Post loss AF

  • I did not experience a change in AF after my loss. I bled/spotted for weeks after my D&C, but after that my cycles weren't any heavier.

The amount you're describing--3 hours for a tampon, even a super one--isn't incredibly concerning.  My first day or two I have to use supers and change every hour.  Like you said I think what you're experiencing now is pretty normal.  I might wait it out.

  • AF pretty much went back to normal (h, h, m, m, l, spotting). I wouldn't be concerned unless you were going through a super tampon every hour with super heavy bleeding and cramping.

Not sure if this is relevant but my first pp AF was really heavy, like I ended up going through an overnight and all over the bed (gross, I know), but the next cycle was only half as bad, and I was back to "normal" by the third. I think it's just the way pregnancy hormones mess with your body, similar to how cycles are different post BC. I know it's not exactly the same, as mine wasn't a loss, but I'd imagine the hormones have a similar effect on your body regardless. HTH

  • And now I hope that didn't come off really insensitive, that wasn't my intention. I hope your cycles get back to normal soon. ((Hugs))

  • @sgautschi‌ - Not at all. I'm sure it's hormone related so I was just looking for some reassurance that it will eventually return to what my normal was. I also wasn't sure of what the time frame was to bleed through and be concerned.

Thanks for your input ladies! Time for me to chill out and quit worrying!
  • Lurker popping... I am experiencing My first AF post loss right now and I am experiencing the same thing you are. I think things are just trying to get evened out in the body. I am sure it's normal. Good luck!
  • If you are bleeding through 1 pad/ tampon an hour you should call immediately, otherwise you can bring it up with your OB if you think there is a problem.
  • Mine was heavier than normal for the first two days that I started bleeding. I had to change a super pad (God, I love Infinity!) every 2-3 hours, where as I normally could make it 4-5 if I needed to.

I would only be concerned if you are bleeding through a super in an hour or less.

  • Thanks, @BruinsBabe33‌ & @Aimothy‌. I couldn't remember what the time limit (for lack of a better term) was.
  • I second what everyone else has said. Mine was not heavy but I had a d&c and my other losses were super early. So sorry you are having to deal with this at all.
