The one year rule

I know the basic rule is to go one year before seeking further testing, but I've been curious - if your cycles are longer than a month, does that change?  If you have less than twelve cycles in twelve months, does that stretch the timeline out 'til you've had twelve kicks at the can, so to speak?

I would most definitely not wait longer due to long cycles. My first year TTC, I think I O'ed twice...I would have had to wait six years at that rate.

  • Nope. My cycles were longer than a month. I think I'd had 10 cycles in my year off BC, and I made the call to my gyn at that point.

  • Nope - if in 12 months you haven't even had the opportunity to try 12 times, I would say that is even all the more reason to see an RE.  And I think think if you *know* there is something not right, you are not required to wait 12 months.  I think the 12 months standard is more for someone who is just casually trying and has no idea about her body.  If you know you have had perfect timing because you are temping, using OPKs, etc., then I would not wait the full 12 months - maybe 9 or 10 months, especially if you are over 30.  Just my opinion!

  • My cycles were non-existent without assistance. I was getting Provera from my obgyn every 60 days or so. I was seeing the RE at 8 months because we knew something was wrong. The 12 month thing is for the "average" woman. If you're ready to move on, I'd move on. But if you're not, and still want to take care of things at home, wait.

  • I would go with 12 months' time, not 12 cycles.  When we first started TTC, that would have taken us through about 2.5 years of time to get 12 cycles.

  • Definitely go by months! (6 months if you have a known issue) If I went by cycles, I would still have about 7 cycles to go and it's already been 5 1/2 years! At this rate, it'd be like 15 years before I saw an RE :)

T-TTC since Dec 2008. PCOS/nonexistant cycles(anovulation) and endo. HSG in '10 revealed both tubes blocked. Lap surgery in Dec '10 to correct. Failed Clomid/IUI and injectable(Bravelle)/IUI cycles so far.

  • I agree with PP. I have 2-3 periods a year typically. If I waited 12 cycles well...
  • I went after 6 months because I was not ovulating (as seen through temping/charting). I had super long cycles and was needing provera to start them. So glad we didn't keep waiting as we found issues with both myself and DH. The best decision though, was moving to an RE after trying for 3 months with my OBGYN. Felt like we were in such better hands with the specialist.

  • You've already gotten some good advice but i agree. If something isn't frith that's even more reason to get to an RE. We were referred after 3 cycles over about 7 months.
