House A/C Question

We have had to have our condenser replaced every 2 years and it's driving me bonkers.  It's like clockwork.  July 2010, July 2012, and today June 2014.  House was bought brand new with a Lenox unit back in 2005.  We had zero problems with it until 2010.  We have used 2 different companies and the company we used today is a very good company that my MIL uses and we feel very good about them, I'm just so frustrated this keeps happening.  We actually bought their yearly maintenance program so they will come out twice a year to do the tune up on the furnace and a/c unit.  If anything breaks we get a discount off the part and don't have to pay the service fee.  Has this kind of thing happened to anyone else?  The guy told me the condenser parts are not as good as 15 years ago, so maybe that's why?

We have gone through three or four blower motors for our furnace in the last two years. When they finally put in one that was from the manufacturer instead of a universal part, that finally fixed the problem. It could a little more, but it might be worth asking.
  • We did ask for them to put in a non generic part and they said they don't have the generic anyways. He said everyone in their company uses the same one.

  • We haven't had any problems with our AC, we do have issues with our furnace at times though.
  • We've been in our house 7 years. I can't say we've had any issues with our AC however the last two years we've had minor furnace problems. We live in the Great Lakes area so no heat makes me way more worried than no AC.

  • What's the cause of the failures? A new unit especially should run for years with nothing more than a general cleaning and filter changes. Are you near a large body of salt water? That could cause corrision issues.

  • No we are in the midwest.  They guy said he looked and didn't see any reason why it should be going out so much.  He did tell me our AC unit could get a credit for early retirement for being 9 years old.  I don't want to buy a new one for a long time.  DH said that if it happens again, he is going to have the guy show him how to replace it and he will do it from now on.
