How long is unemployment these days?

Is there a website where I can find out how long someone can collect unemployment? My dad is still unemployed and my mom swears they only will get 20 weeks but that seem not that long considering that's really only 5 months. I thought I should pass some better information to her.

I believe it's state specific. I just googled "how long is unemployment" and the first hit was my state's page on the issue. In most states it's 26 weeks since Congress never passed the extension of the extended unemployment benefits.

I agree, most States have a 26 week limit on unemployment. Also, with the number of baby boomers exiting the work force and companies hiring again, I doubt they will extend the unemployment benefits again.

I found a link that showed all states. Yes ours is only 20. Some only have 16. Just doesn't seem like much. I had assumed it was still 2 years. He should find out tomorrow if he gets this job. My mom is freaking out because they will loose their unemployment in mid august and they don't want to dip into their retirement yet because they are only 60

The company my dad worked for downsized when he was 60. It was a huge waiting game and struggle to get another job. He wasn't ready to retire by any means.

They aren't ready to retire either and actually want him working to at least 66 or 70 because social security payments would be bigger. My mom has gotten really good at tweaking resumes. She thinks HR discriminates on age and if you don't have college degree. So, she has cut off some of his jobs from a long time ago so they won't think he is so old and even got him some "just for men" to cover up his grey hairs. I really hope they get the job too, I know my mom is sick of him being unemployed. She thought he would have a job by mid april, but I told her it sometimes takes awhile to get a job lined up. They started a business for him mowing lawns. He has 6 regular customers now, us being one of them. They know he will take a huge pay cut because he use to make $92,000. I think this job will be maybe $60,000. So his lawn mowing will supplement his job.

Update - just heard back from my mom and he didn't get the job. This was thru an employment agency. It was down to him and another guy and I guess they picked the other guy. My parents feel that the employment agency screwed them out of it. There was supposed to be a 2nd interview today but the agency told my dad yesterday that they didn't have time to do the 2nd interview and they would decide today on who they would hire.

I feel like the only way he can get a job at his age is to go thru a head hunter. FIL used a head hunter to get his current job, he got it within 3 months. I need to find out how you go about finding a head hunter.

Just to clarify for you and your mom - HR professionals are the people who ensure there is no discrimination involved with hiring practices for an organization. It would be very unusual that they would be the ones discriminating. Your dad is right to only include more recent experience as things he did 30 years ago likely aren't relevant to what he would be doing today. Why exactly do you and your parents think the employment agency "screwed him" out of the job? You realize they don't get paid if they don't place people, . It sounds like he has many years of experience so I'm sure there will be a company out there that will take him on. I don't know what industry he is in but, perhaps he could do consulting work which would earn him a higher income. I know several people who didn't make a ton of money in their job and then went on to consulting and made much more. A lot of these folks are closer to retirement age so companies love to use their wealth of knowledge and experience without having to hire on extra head count. Good luck to your dad!

I have had good luck with temp services, it is similar to a head hunter but works well for people without degrees but have experience.

I don't necessarily feel they screwed him over, but my parents do. I'm sure it's frustrating to be in their situation and to be that close to getting hired. It probably feels like a burn. He has done facility management in the past. He also has a lot of hands on work like welding and electrical engineering. Temp jobs may not be a bad route. he could always weld for the time being.
