**Meghan**-your kitchen

I saw your blog post with your kitchen makeover, and it reminded me that I've been meaning to ask you this for awhile...how was it, painting the cabinets??  This is something I fantasize about doing to ours, since I'm not sure that a full makeover with brand new cabinets is in the cards right now.  I love the clean white look of yours!

Re: **Meghan**-your kitchen

  • I am so happy that we painted our cabinets!  We did have someone paint them for us, so that made it easy.  Rich could have done it, but since it was kind of a big project and he was painting the rest of our downstairs at the time, we just hired someone.

It has made such a difference to our kitchen, and I can't believe we lived with ugly cabinets for so long!  I would do it again in a heartbeat!

  • It looks fantastic, it is amazing how much of a difference it can make!  Our kitchen is a bit dark, with the dark cabinets, black appliances and the fact that there's only one small window for natural light, so I'm thinking if we can't do a full makeover, lightening up the cabinets might help.  Brian wasn't sold on the idea, but I sent him to your blog to look at your after and he was impressed, so I may have made a bit of progress with him :)

I'm having someone come over to give us an estimate on painting the paneling in our playroom, so maybe I'll see what they would charge to do the cabinets as well.

  • It definitely brightens up the whole room!  I had planned to change the color of our kitchen too, but then the cabinets made such a difference, that I ended up liking our original color all over again.

Although, we did not plan to replace our appliances until next year, but after the cabinets were painted, they looked so gross, we ended up replacing them this year.  You might not want to share that with Brian. ;)

  • haha, yeah I'll keep that part to myself! :)  his parents did a complete kitchen renovation and it looks a-ma-zing.  they knocked out a wall to open it up to the dining area, replaced all of the cabinets, floors, new lighting, new countertops, new appliances....I stand in their house and drool every time we visit now and Brian just shakes his head and tells me to keep dreaming.  Of course I then come home and start eying up walls that can be taken down...

The same thing happens nearly every time I watch HGTV, too.

  • We speak the same language!  We started with the kitchen.  We planned to paint it a blue/gray, but when we started painting, I decided I wanted the green to stay.  So, since we had the paint, I decided we needed to use it for the powder room.  I then decided the vanity also needed to be painted.  Then, I thought, why not just spruce up the whole downstairs with new paint!!!!!  So we did the family room, living room, foyer, and dining room.  We also just finished painting the dining room furniture.  Plans to move on to the basement are coming soon....

Also every "we" can basically be replaced with "Rich".

Emmy, we redid the kitchen at the lake this year, and Steve was convinced he wanted to keep our old fridge, despite my, my parents and his mom telling him it should go. We put in a tile floor, got new cabinets and repainted. The first thing he said was, "we need a new fridge." It's amazing what a nice looking room does to make older appliances look terrible. You definitely don't want to share that with Brian...let him come to that conclusion on his own :)

We're also going to DIY painting some of the paneling up there. I can't wait to see how big an improvement a little paint can make on terrible paneling.

haha, I think he would still argue!!  our over the range microwave is new as of December, and the dishwasher is new as of last summer (both of those old ones stopped working so we had to replace)  I don't know how old the fridge and oven are, but I can already hear his arguments about how we recently replaced 2 of the 4 things in the room....I say that's what craigslist is for :)

Hopefully those links work - I can't access my blog or pictures at work, and can't figure out how to post them from my phone!

  • We painted ours too and I'm really happy with them. It's a big project I'd suggest farming out to someone else, but it makes a huge difference. People can't believe they're the exact same cabinets.

It is utterly amazing how much painting your cabinets can do, we went from an off white to black in our old house and it made a huge difference (and the cabinets were the original 1940's cabinets). It was amazing what a little paint and matching hinges could do to modernize the kitchen, yet still keep it in character of the house.

I say go for it! I actually paid someone to paint these because it was oil paint, it was a small kitchen but I think it cost $600.  The lower price was because I let her take the doors and spray them at her shop.
