Name dilemma , opinions needed!

Ok for those of you that have named children or have your future children's name picked out how did you know it was "the one"?! I'm starting to panic about his name!

We both absolutely love the name Tyrion (yes from Game of Thrones) And decided season 1 of the show we would use it as a boys first name. Now that it's real I couldn't decide if I really wanted to use the name as a first name mainly because I feel people would judge us for using a character name. We decided on Declan as his first name with Tyrion as the middle name but now I'm thinking I want to go back to using Tyrion! I absolutely love it and it is my first choice (my husbands too).

So a second question would you judge someone for using a "character name" for there child ? I'm probably over thinking this but wanted opinions!!

Re: Name dilemma , opinions needed!

  • I don't watch GoT but if you really love it then use it!

I had a friend at law school who was named Mandy after the Barry Manilow song (which was actually about a dog...), so Tyrion is definitely not the weirdest naming story I've heard ;)

Declan is really cute too, though!

Just curious, since I don't know anything about GoT...are you sure the character isn't killed off in some weird way?  I feel like that's all I ever hear about that show!

  • I would never judge someone for that.  Seriously, it doesn't matter where you heard the name, if you like it, that's that. You're going to get comments no matter what you name your kid, but really it's your choice.  DH and I did the yell test for which names we liked.  If you feel better yelling, "Tyrion, pick up your legos!" more than, "Declan, go to your room!" then that is the clear choice.  LOL!

Also, the girl's name we picked out is River.  Yes, I got it from Firefly/Serenity.  The character has nothing to do with why we like that name, we just heard it and liked it.

  • I also like the name Tyrion and prefer it as the first name with Declan as the middle name.  I think you should do what you think is best and what suits you and your H the best.  And no, I wouldn't judge anyone using a character name.  My parents named me after a character they saw in a movie. :)

  • My dad gave me my middle name (Valerie) after a girl he used to date...so no, I wouldn't judge you!

I live under a rock and have never seen that show, but I think it's a neat name. How is it pronounced, btw? Is it TY-REE-ON?

  • People will judge no matter what you pick. Too trendy, too unknown, too whatever... I've gotten a few looks with Eliza. We like it so who cares.

Omg I love the yell text @goatlady12‌!

  • Your baby, your choice. I don't think it is bad to name after a character at all.

  • Thanks ladies!!! We technically aren't really naming him after the character we both just love the name! As of yet he has not died in some weird way but the way this series goes you never know! It is pronounced like Tier -E - an.
  • I would never judge somebody for naming a child after a fictional character! I might side-eye a little bit if it was a character with a really outrageous and impronouncable name, or a character that had done some terrible stuff. So as far as GoT goes, I'm way more in favor of Tyrion than, say, Joffrey. :P

And if people want to bag on you for naming your son after a book character, just think that most people with really common first names - John, James, Mark, Mary, Rebecca, Elizabeth, just to name a few - are all named after characters from the Bible! Granted the Bible is a tad more important than GoT, but isn't it basically the same thing?

Kelly Clarkson just named her daughter River Rose and I think it's super cute.

Oh no, I hope that doesn't mean the name gets really popular.

  • I wouldn't judge you for using a character name. I mean if DH and I sit and watch the credits of video games and movies for inspiration, how can I judge someone for picking a name from a book? Although, I do judge people who name their kids among other things Apple, Blue, and North.

@goatlady12‌ -I love the idea of the yell test. Lol

  • I don't judge you.  I judge those who make up names, change spellings of names and add punctuation to the middle of the names, just for fun.  I think your reasoning is great and it's a normal name in my opinion.

I am in a similar name problem.  I have always loved the name Jack.  Now that I'm pregnant, I hate it and H contributes no names because he claims he came up with a girl name.  He suggested it.  We discussed and mutually agreed.  He doesn't remember those other steps.
  • I was in labor and we still hadn't completely decided on a name.

I wouldn't judge someone for choosing a name based on a book character. We did that with our dog :). If you like the name, go for it.

  • Thanks so much for the feedback ladies!!! We are going to leave both names on the table and wait til we meet him to decide!
  • @goatlady12‌ I did the tell test when we were first deciding ! I would call out names while I was driving since I figured when he's older I'm sure I'll be yelling i to the back seat lol
  • I think leaving it up to meeting him, but being happy with both options is a good idea! I don't think it's weird to name after characters, etc. Just don't tell him where it came from if Tyrion ends up in a poor situation ;) If you decide later you prefer the other name but have used both Tyrion and Declan, you can always have him go by his middle name!

  • From one person to another doing a similar thing, I don't think it's weird and will not judge anyone who picks character inspirations for names. Especially if they're from good sources.

  • After reading the names again I'm partial to Declan because it's a straightforward name that is both easy to spell and pronounce. Tyrion is still a cool name, but I'm imaging a life for that boy trying to correct people when they say his name.  This is coming from the child of parents with unusual names (Eldon and Vesna, in case you're curious). People will probably be familiar with the name now, since it's on a TV show, but in 20 years it might be a head scratcher.

I've never read GoT so I would have had no idea where the name came from...

That said we didn't find out until DD was born what we were having and her name is Georgiana but if she had been a boy she would have been Bailey Holden and Holden is the name of the character in catcher in the rye (or whatever it's called) we obviously did not pick it because of that book but people probably would have made the association.

Both her full name now and the boy name we picked were based solely on family members. My dad was George so Georgiana...she shares my middle name. And my maiden name was Bailey and DH's 4x great grandpa was Holden.

So name your child after whoever you choose. :-)
