Paint for my playroom: let's discuss

Woohoo, we are having someone give us an estimate to finally paint the paneling in our playroom!!  Now I just need to figure out colors. The pictures I'll post are old, but it will at least give you an idea of colors. The room is rectangular, one wall is dark red brick.  the opposite wall is the paneling that also has a fireplace in the middle and built in shelves on the other side (we would paint the shelves, too)

image

The 2 smaller walls are currently white; one has a window, the other has double doors (the doors are a beige color)

image

imageThoughts?  Continue the white that's already on the 2 walls, or is that too much??

I would paint the wood white and the walls a greige. That way it isn't so white and painting walls is either than painting wood/trim but it is still neutral. I would also paint the door and trim the same white as the wood.

Our plans are to whitewash ours, but we have knotty pine not paneling that it horizontal and there is a lot of it.

  • I'm a fan of color in a playroom.

I would paint the paneling and the doors white. And then introduce some color for the two white walls.  A blue/green combo like this would brighten it up.

A turquoise color would also look nice with the red brick.

  • I agree that I would paint the paneling and wood white, and do a different color for the walls.  Either a greige or other neutral color.
  • hmmm....hadn't thought about painting the trim to be honest.  question: if we do that, would we also have to paint the window ledges/outer edges of those?  All of the window ledges are that same color/wood throughout the house....

I really need HGTV to just come to my house and make these decisions for me.  You know, for free.

I have SW Perfect Greige in my powder room and love it.

  • Do you want it to look like a playroom or do you want it neutral?

Well, if you are going to leave the trim stained then paint the doors the same color as the walls so they blend. The beige makes them stand out. I would leave the trim matching the rest of the house if you are not planning on making it white ever.

So the trim in the rest of the house is white, haha.  the trim around the bottom of the walls, I mean. The playroom is the only room with wood trim. The window ledges/edges in the house are all the same wood color.

lala- I prefer to keep it neutral because it's taken us almost 4 years to get around to painting this, I don't want to have to repaint again in a few years when it's (hopefully) not being used as a playroom anymore!  It's the room right off of our kitchen, and leads out to our patio so it sees a lot of traffic.

So your window trim is white with stained ledges and baseboards? Personally, I would want all white or all stained, not half and half but that is a personal preference. I am sure that Brian would not like this, but I would paint all the trim white.

But I hate wood right now, soooo take my opinion with a grain of salt.

No, sorry.  see the little bit of window ledge that's showing in that first picture?  that's all of the windows in the house.  Some type of dark wood.  Every other room in the house has white painted baseboards, the playroom has wooden baseboards.

Oh, then yes I would totally paint the trim white. It will make it look cohesive

I would do white on the trim and the paneling, and do a neutral on the wall.  Personally I prefer a true gray to other neutrals, but that is me. But FYI your art will look awesome on a gray.

Also you can fill the ridges in the paneling to get a nice smooth look. That might be costly though.  I have no idea what that might cost because I always do all the prepping and painting in our house (well sans the ceilings which my tall husband does).

Oh and is the brick on the fireplace the same as the wall?  In the pictures they look like 2 different colors.
  • Oh, and I said a greige because you have tan carpeting. I think grey walls with tan carpet would look a bit odd.
