Finding a helpful mortgage company?

We were pre-approved through a local bank when we started house shopping last fall, but have not been impressed with their customer service (on more than one occasion, e-mails and questions go completely unanswered.) So now that we've finally found a house that we'd like to make an offer on, we're considering trying a different bank/credit union/mortgage company. Has anyone used Amerifirst? There is one very negative review I found from another state, but they have a good rating with the BBB.

Beyond that, if there are any companies that offer FHA mortgages that you highly recommend or that you would advise anyone to avoid, I'd love to hear your experiences!

What area are you in? Check your local credit unions, and maybe check with some bigger banks as well. I know that Wells Fargo does mortgages, as does M&T Bank.

I would try a credit union.

Our loan sold a few times before we made our first payment. So you might end up with a totally different company that you make your payments to.

I wouldn't get too hung up on the long term customer service relationship. We used a local bank and were informed partway through the process that they would sell off our loan. My first house sold the loan after a couple of years. You have no control over who it goes to and the service you'll receive. And after you close, you should have minimal to no need to interact with them.

If looking for someone "good" for making it through the closing process in one piece, can you ask friends/family for recommendations? We went with a smaller, local bank. We were treated really well and the process was so easy and stress free.

We've used Chase bank several times. Part of the reason I stick with them is they've never sold my mortgage to anybody else. Can't promise it in the future, but has been my experience for 10+ yrs now.
