Reading on the computer?

What do you guys use to read stuff on the computer? I have a friend with not enough to do at work (no, really, I do). Only problem is her work limits downloading programs and she doesn't have an ereader. Can she still do it?

Re: Reading on the computer?

  • Does she have a smart phone? I use my phone when nothing else is available...
  • She could use the Kindle Cloud reader, I use the Chrome extension, I use that at work when things are a little slow.

Alison's book recommendations, favorite quotes, book clubs, book trivia, book lists (read shelf)
  • I've used the Kindle Cloud Reader for purchased books and Overdrive READ for library eBooks I have checked out.

I'm currently experimenting with Scribd, which is one of the eBook subscriptions services available at the moment ($8.99 for unlimited reading each month). They have apps for your devices and you can also read in your browser. I signed up for the 1 month free trial and have earned extra free months thanks to referrals! (Using my referral link extends your free trial to 2 months: http://www.scribd.com/g/48i67l). I like Scribd a lot and will probably continue paying for it once my free trial time runs out.

I'm actually allowed to read at work when things are slow, which is not the norm for librarians funnily enough. Some libraries see it as "unprofessional" but as long as you're aware of your surroundings and greeting every patron so they know you're approachable, my supervisor doesn't see a problem with it. He thinks it makes sense for the public to see us reading and gives us a chance to start talking about books and promoting our materials and services such as eBook checkout. :)

  • I'm also allowed to read during slow times at my library.  We have Digital Editions on our computers, but at my old job I couldn't download anything.  To get around it, I put DE on a flash drive and ran it from there.
