The baby center calculator lists these as the average prices for baby
Diapers $72.00
Wipes $20.00
Clothes $50.00

Re: Parents! Is this accurate for you?

  • Is this monthly? Clothes and books/toys seem high to me (not a mom though). Look forward to what the moms say!

Are these numbers based on per month?  If so I would say they are high compared to what we spend monthly.  I don't buy diapers every month because I stock up when they are on a really good sale and I have coupons, the same goes for the wipes.   Also I breast feed and any food LO eats is the same as what we are having we make our own baby food by using a food processor.  Toiletries seems high to me that is maybe what I spend in a year on my LO and the clothes seems high if this is a monthly average but I buy from consignment stores mostly since they grow out of clothes ridiculously fast.

  • Several of those things seem high. I get formula from Sams Club for instance and 4 gigantic tubs of their brand is only $88 a month. Here's your list with my opinions next to them:
Diapers $72.00 maybe at the beginning but this will go down. Figure out how you can stockpile these. CVS if you have one is THE BEST place to buy diapers in my experience. I spend WAY less than this a month.
Wipes $20.00 These go on sale at my grocery store for $1 regularly so this would be WAY high. I would say on stockup months maybe $15, but then they last a while. In 2 weeks I MAY go through 3 packs.
Clothes $50.00. This can be as expensive or as inexpensive as you need it to be. Garage sales and consignment shops are awesome. As are clearance racks.
    Toilitries  $44.00 Totally tooooooo high!
Doctors $40.00 In 1 year I've only had 1 copay- otherwise they were all well visits, so this is way high.
RX $40.00. 3 prescriptions this year at $10 each, so again way high.
    Formula $105.00 A bit high
Food $57.00 not necessary for the first couple months. Then depending upon what you want to feed your kid stockpile when you can get jars for 50 cents or less. Never spent this much in a month. Probably spend about $20
Toys/Books $36.00 Again can be as high or low as you want it to be

Our 'baby' budget each month is around $250. Generally we don't spend that unless I am doing some serious stock up on something. A normal month is formula plus whatever else at around 150-200.
Sorry for the funky format- that's how it copied and pasted for some reason.
One blog I follow to find these good deals for kids is southernsavers.com. She has a section of her website for Diapers and Wipes. But if you don't want to do that, just watch the CVS ad. When they have their sale where you spend $30 and get $10 rewards that is the best time to buy diapers. Search coupons.com for diapers coupons and you can gets bags of diapers for $3-4 which is about 10 cents a diapers. I use huggies most of the time because they are cheaper after coupons than anything else, including store brand!

  • Diapers - $72 seems high to me (maybe close to that for the first 2 months, but diaper consumption slows down pretty quickly).  Now, I probably spend about $40 on diapers a month, and I do get pampers swaddlers, so i'm not getting the cheaper or generic brands.  I shop diapers.com, target, and CVS just depending on which one has the best price at the time, and if I get a really good price I stock up. (And my kid is a peeing machine so I change very often)

Wipes - $20 seems a little high.  I shop Costco for wipes and the $20 box lasts about 2 months.

Clothes - $50, I probably spend this, or probably a lot more, but not out of necessity.

Toiletries - $44, seems very high.  My baby is 7 months old and still on his first big bottle of baby shampoo.  Diaper rash cream is also something that lasts super long (unless I guess if you had a baby that gets it a lot, mine doesn't, so i've been lucky here).  I'd say sunscreen is a big part of this budget at the moment, but even then, it still all wouldn't add up to $44 a month.

Doctors - $40, we have only spent money on one sick visit, because of how our insurance works, it was around $130.  But all well visits are free, so it is obviously good to have a little budget for sick visits, but that would depend on your insurance coverage as to how much makes sense.

RX - $40, we have never spent this much on RX items up to this point.  Our pedi gave us iron supplements when I was breast feeding, but we moved onto formula before he even took any and formula has iron, so that is not needed if you plan to formula feed.  Recently the pedi wrote an rx for flouride since our water doesn't have any, but we have some more research to do before giving him that as well.  So, unless there were other unforseen issues, these two might be the rx's you could need, and it would depend on insurance as to how much it would cost you per month (probably closer to $10-$20 a month?).

Formula - $105, this really depends on your baby.  I use Amazon subscribe & save as it is the cheapest for the organic formula we use...we go through 8+ cans a month, so this costs us closer to $200/month.  My little guy eats a lot though.

Food - $57, this is not necessary the first 4-6 months until you start purees (or BLW).  At that time, you can usually get 2-4 servings for about $1 (Target), or with BLW you would be offering things like bananas or slices/chunks of other foods, which I don't think would add up to this.  So I would think this is high up until the baby is getting an actual full meal, separate from yours, which is not for a while.

Toys/Books - $36, we don't spend much at all on this right now.  He got a ton of books from family/friends when he was born, we haven't even gotten through them all yet.  We have bought a bouncer and plan on getting a walker soon, so those toys can add up, but can also be on a registry.  Not bad to have this as a budget item so it is put aside each month for something bigger as the baby progresses and needs more stimulating and/or physical toys.

I think overall this budget is high, but that is not a bad thing because you never know if your baby will be a big eater, go through diaper rash cream like a boss, need a particular kind of diaper, have acid reflux or something else that would require an rx, etc.  What I have learned is that a lot of this parenting thing is totally fly by the seat of your pants!

Diapers$72.00 - You can buy a box of 100+ diapers for about $25, so I know we do not pay $72/month. They don't go through 8 diapers a day, especially as they get a little older.

Wipes$20.00 - Also buy in bulk. Target brand. You can get 6 packs for like $14 and you won't go through 6 packs a month.

Clothes$50.00 - Maybe $50, maybe. You can get a pack of 6 onesies for $10 and as they get older you'll find things cheap also.

    Toilitries $44.00 - No

Doctors$40.00 - Possible for sick visits. You may only have a sick visit every few months.

    RX$40.00 - Maybe if needed

Formula$105.00 - Formula was the most expensive but that's only until age 1 and they'll start eating other foods before that time.  It is so temporary and a $24 can of formula will last you about 10-14 days.

Food$57.00 - After formula and puree food, they can pretty much eat what you eat, which doesn't have to add $57/month to budget.

Toys/Books$36.00 - You will get so many gifts it's not even funny, so unless you want to pay for some toys, it wouldn't cost that.

Daycare$560.00 - Ours is $450/month for one, $850/month for two.

    Family Ins.$372.00

  • Not sure where you live, but wanted to point out that this will greatly impact your child care costs. I live in HCOL area, and pay more then double that for one child in daycare (and that was one of the least expensive centers in my area). Ask some of your friends what they pay to make sure your estimate above is inline.

Diapers$72.00 - Maybe for 2 kids.. when they're newborns, you're going through 5-8 a day but that doesn't last forever. We got a lot of newborn/size 1 diapers from family when DD#1 was born.. every time someone came over, they had a box diapers for us.. it was great!

Wipes$20.00. We buy dry medical supply wipes in bulk and use water to clean them. We'll add a small amount of their soap if it's really messy (mostly newborn). I don't like adding all of those chemicals on their sensitive skin. We kept a small package in the diaper bag in case we didn't have water around, but rarely ran into that issue.

Clothes$50.00 - Probably for 2 kids and that includes shoes, coats, boots, etc. DD#2 gets a lot of hand-me-downs so we occasionally splurge on a cute outfit for her (for her birthday, x-mas, etc)

Toilitries $44.00 - Not even close- their soap is $7 and lasts at least 3 months. I don't know what other toiletries a baby would need...

Doctors$40.00 - We have well and sick visits covered in full until 19. Our ER copay is $250/Inpatient $500 so that's where our cost comes in for serious issues.

RX$40.00 - All generic is $0 for kids to 19 and we're on a $10/$25/$40 plan otherwise. Every script the girls have needed so far has been covered in full.

Formula$105.00 - I BF'd/pumped until both were 9 months old (pump was like $250). We supplemented as they got older and I was back at work, supply was tanking. We would get deals on formula though, use our target card for 5% off.. it is pricey, but as soon as they turn 1, we switched them to Organic whole cow's milk.

Food$57.00 - Just puree everything and have a few jars/pouches for backup..BRU has really good deals like 10 for $10.

Toys/Books$36.00 - Definitely not this- for a first baby, you get gifts nonstop and you can ask for books or specific things when family asks what you need. Babies don't need much- just something to shove in their mouths, a few books that won't tear and has bright colors, and lots of love and attention.

Daycare$560.00 - For full time, it averages $1,650/month for 2 kids. $560 for one is a steal!

Family Ins.$372.. ours is $90/paycheck and that includes dental, but everyone will be different there.

My eyes popped at toiletries.  H and I don't spend near that much on ourselves - even including the occasional make-up purchase.  You'd have to have a super smelly kid to spend that much on toiletries.

On the other hand, don't underestimate the power of cute baby clothes.  My mother tells me that my dad lost it after I was born and kept bringing home little pink dresses every time he drove by the mall, even though 1) my mom kept telling him to stop and 2) I had bright red hair and looked absolutely terrible in pink.

Obviously budgeting higher vs. lower is a good thing.  If you can manage with this budget I would think that most months you'd have a significant chunk left over.  Maybe that's a good way to work in some college savings too?  Whatever is left over gets sent to the college fund?

  • If this is monthly, it seems crazy high.  We only spent $35-$40/month on diapers from amazon mom.  Wipes were pretty cheap.  We would buy a 3 pack from Target and that would last more than a month.  Clothes are $50 per season for us.  Toiletries?  Babies need them?  LOL.  Occasionally we would buy the little noses bottle for boogies and destine but that wasn't every month.  Doctors we only paid for sickness because wellness is paid 100%.  Our doc copay is only $5 right now.  RX is only needed if the baby is sick.  Formula was our major expense since I didn't breastfeed.  We would buy the big tubs of similac.  Babies don't typically eat food until 5-6 months.  Toys we always got from the grandparents.  Daycare is not an issue for us since I'm home during the days and our insurance is crazy cheap.  $106 for a family of 3.

I have put in red what I can remember for when my LO was younger.  Prescriptions and Dr Visits all are based on what health insurance you have.  We don't pay anything for well visits.  We usually got one large box of diapers a month and that worked for us.  MIL who does the babysitting would get a box also so that would be roughly $50 total between the two families.  We bought soap and shampoo at BJ's and we do it once or twice a year.
  • Diapers $50...depends on brand, we use pampers
Wipes $25 every 2 months (we use huggies and buy a huge box of 1000)
Toiletries...We bought a huge bottle of shampoo/body wash that has lasted6 months so far and were not even half done.  We bathe DD 5 times/week. It was $20.
Formula $75/month.  We use a can/week and we use the store brand.

The rest seemed pretty accurate to me.

We spend more than that in diapers, but my kid is in size 6 and they are pricy. I just paid $70 for 196 diapers. We probably use 5-7 per day (still) so that will hold us for a month. Baby won't eat food for the first six months, but if mom is breastfeeding, she might need to eat more. I've found that our water bill just about doubled since having kids. More baths, more laundry, more dishes, etc. Our other utilities stayed about the same.
  • Diapers $35/month through Amazon Subscribe & Save

Wipes $15/ every three months through Amazon Subscribe & Save (our daycare supplies wipes - we only have to take diapers)

Clothes - you actually can make that cheap or expensive buy buying used or buying expensive brands, new. My kids were only a couple months old when Christmas came so family can help in that area.

Toiletries - $6.99 for BabyGanics baby wash, $4 for diaper cream, $9.99 for BabyGanics eczema lotion - but it would be rare that we would need to purchase these every month.

Medical - varies based on insurance

Rx - varies based on insurance
OTC - $5 for a bottle of acetaminophen and/or ibuprofen (not recommended under the age of 6 months), occasional saline nose dropes (one bottle lasted us the first year)

Formula - varies based on brand
** I breastfed and pumped however even with new health care laws, my insurance would only cover a manual pump which would not work for me as after I returned to work I exclusively pumped. I paid about $250 but I used it for both kids. Pumping supplies and accessories vary.

Food - varies. We did a combo of organic baby food (Earth's Best, Plum Organics) and making our own. I used a food processor, nothing fancy.

Toys/books - that varies depending on your preferences

Daycare - varies depending on center vs in-home and COL

  • Our baby isn't here yet, so I don't really know, but around here (medium cost of living area), you can get a diaper service for $75/month, which I always thought was the most expensive diapering option (service drops off clean cloth diapers and picks up soiled cloth diapers weekly--so the convenience of disposable with the benefits of cloth), and those are newborn price and should also drop as baby needs fewer diapers.

I think we're going to be paying around $1000/month for daycare though.  And I think around $200/month for insurance (beyond what we already pay for the adults in the family).

Diapers will be more in the beginning because you go through way more in a day. Start stocking up in different sizes now. And you will probably get a bunch at your baby shower to get through a lot of the NB size.

Wipes I pay around $15 for a huge box that lasts us months. This will last longer as your baby gets older too.

Clothes can vary.. it depends on what you want to spend really. Again if you are having a shower you will get a ton to probably last through the NB size. People love buying clothes. They grow so fast in the first year, especially first few months I always tell people to keep tags on some things until they are ready to wear it. My son never fit into NB and I had already took tags off and washed everything and couldn't use any of it. This number changes as they get older and change sizes. My daughter has been in 2T since she was 11 months and she is now 18 months, so I haven't had to buy much in the past 6 months and she probably won't be in 3T for at least 6 more months.

Toiletries seems stupid. I have probably spent around $50 for a year of baby wash, lotion, diaper cream, tylenol, gripe water..

Formula is expensive. I used Kirkland from Costco and it was almost half the price of Similac, but we still spent quite a bit. I can't remember now.

Food. Doesn't have to be that expensive if you make your own. We didn't start our daughter on solids until 7 months and probably only spent $15 more than our normal grocery bill with the added produce. Puree your own or do baby led weaning. If you are buying jars of food then it's probably a lot more.

Doctors. Well checks are all completely covered for us. I guess it depends on any emergencies. and I think I've only had to get 1 prescription for either kid in the last year.. so that number is way high.

Toys/Books. That also depends on what you want to spend. We don't really buy any toys outside of birthdays and Christmas.. maybe Easter. I have probably spent $100 total on books over 4 years. Babies really don't need much.

We don't pay for daycare, but your # seems low-average and our insurance I think is a similar cost, but it was switched to family when we were married so it hasn't changed since having kids.

Babies can be expensive, but it's also just easy to spend way more than you need to. It's good to have all of these things budgeted out and it will probably take you a couple months to find your own numbers.

We used cloth diapers and didn't use formula, so after an initial outlay of a few hundred dollars we didn't have a monthly expense for diapers, wipes or formula. We didn't have a co-pay for well baby check-ups and neither of our kids needed any prescriptions during their first years so those costs were also 0. We had generous friends and family, took any and all offers of free stuff, and shopped consignment for anything we didn't get free. Our combined average monthly cost for clothes/toys/books was around $40. Our kids didn't start on food until 6 months, and even then they didn't eat much, so I'm not sure why the food costs are so high. I definitely did eat more while nursing, but I couldn't put an exact price on that.
  • If you rarely buy new clothing and toys you will save a lot there. Go to garage sales and/or consignment stores like Once Upon a Child for GREAT kids items. Aside from gifts they get, all our 3 kids clothes come from Once Upon a Child. Last trip there, I spent $200 and got over 40 items...including a Columbia coat. They also have a program that for every $10 you spend you get a stamp and when you collect 20 stamps you get 15% off your purchase. They also run sales and have a grandparents day when grandparents who shop get a discount.

They also sell toys, books, DVDs, strollers, bouncers, saucers, potty seats, and basically other hard items that are non fabric.

When our DS was less than 1, I bought him a $150 Fisher Price bouncer for $50.
