3 1/2 still puts everything in her mouth

Are my expectations too high for a 3 1/2 year old?  I feel like dd should be able to play playdoh without me watching her like a hawk, but apparently she can't.  She is still eating playdoh and a couple weeks ago she at a portion of a paperback book at nap time.  My oldest child hasn't done anything like that since she was under 2.  I'm worried about sending her to preschool in the fall.  Should I let them know that she will be the kid eating paste?   I know that babies/toddlers like to explore things with all their senses (especially tasting) but shouldn't she be out growing that by now? Maybe my oldest dd was just a very mature 2 year old?

Signed,
This kid is making my hair turn gray

Re: 3 1/2 still puts everything in her mouth

  • EJ put stuff in her mouth for a long time, but none of it was edible. More like toys and stuff like that.  It doesn't sound like anything she is ingesting will hurt her. But perhaps mention it to her doc at her next appointment to see if they have any advice.
  • These second children are challenging, aren't they.  Nolan is 2.5 and still puts things like bits of play-doh and rocks in his mouth.  DH freaks out about the play-doh, but I'm in the camp of it's non-toxic and won't kill him.

  • DD is 5 and I've noticed I'm telling her all the time to not put insert whatever in her mouth. For her I think it's because she use to suck her thumb and just stopped in February. So she still is working on the oral fixation!
  • Thanks guy!  Maybe it's just her "normal"?  Amy, you are so right.  These second born kids are soooo different the the rule following first born.  Last summer she was putting rocks, dirt and play-doh in her mouth.  This summer it's just play-doh.  I guess that's at least some improvement lol.  Although, the book eating incident last month landed her in the ER because there was a staple in the book.
