Dog nail care - at home

Does anyone dremel their dog's nails at home?  If so, tell me about it...

Re: Dog nail care - at home

  • We tried once, the noise freaked them out. We had 2 dogs that give me no trouble cutting at home, I use the cutters with a guard. We also had 1 dog that NO ONE could cut her nails, they were ridiculously long, we walked a lot on concrete. We tried the dremel and she freaked out! Our bulldog, I have never tried. He bites his nails so all is good.

  • Same as Kris, our dogs freaked out when we tried it. I think the noise combined with the vibration did them in. My sister in law is a vet tech so she cuts their nails for us now.

  • I agree that the vibration may have also been an issue. I mean, I wouldn't want my nails dremelled, it gives me the heeby-geebies thinking about how that would feel.

My clippers are similar to these. And I only had one incident of cutting the quick BUT it was because I cut the same nail twice because my husband interrupted me.

  • I do both of mine.  Their nails are mostly white/clear so I can see the quick. I started with Bella young and she is mostly submissive so I taught her to let me do it.  Now when I get the clippers out she lays down nervously on her side and lets me clip one foot at a time. Then runs to get a cookie when we are done.  Mo, I just kinda hold him and do them. He doesn't resist much either but he loves any kind of attention. He also gets a cookie but he really would just do it for the petting.

  • Thanks everyone.   Jake's nails are prone to chipping and cracking.  The dremel seems to do a better job of keeping the chipping at bay vs clipping them.   I thought if I could at home dremel, his nails would stay better maintained.  But, maybe it's something best left to the professionals.

  • Oh I misread, we don't use a dremel.

Well, if he is used to it then maybe it would work. All our dogs always had them clipped so I think the dremel freaked them out. The only time theirs split is when they get too long and get caught on something.

We bought a dremel and sadly have only used it once.  DH said he wanted to do it at home but then it didn't work that well when he tried it.  While our dog didn't enjoy it she stayed still enough.  I think the bigger problem was that after we dremel the nails we then apply soft claws.  Soft claws are nail covers (we get pink) that help keep our floors and furniture in better shape and also look really cute: function + fashion!  They were originally designed for cats but also work on smaller dogs.  Anyway, DH didn't do very well with the application of the soft claws and since we do both dremel and pink nails at the same time it is just easier to have the groomer do it.

I'm not good at posting pictures but I will try one with the pink nails.  She is also wearing the jacket we had made for her that I mentioned in a post from March (I think).
