Any side effects with progesterone?

The nurse-midwife I see for my annual, in consultation with an OB at her practice, have given me the go ahead for 10 days of progesterone to finally end this cycle.  Are there any side effects I might experience with it?

Re: Any side effects with progesterone?

  • to end a cycle? progesterone prevents a period from starting, typically. i guess i'm missing something.

if it's suppositories, there will be leaking. that's about it. if it's an oral med, some seem to deal with drowsiness and feeling pukey.

I used the suppositories and in addition to a bit of leakage (it was a bit gross, but not terrible), I was a ball of emotions.

@arj14, are you taking pills or suppositories?  Also, what type of progesterone are you taking?

One type I was on to treat my hyperplasia was called Megace and that is often given to women to stop excessive bleeding.  I took it for 3 months and didn't bleed at all. One of the main side effects of that is increased appetite and weight gain, it was awful.

There is also Provera which I took for 3 months for the hyperplasia and bleed on and off with that. Outside of treating the hyperplasia I've taken 10 days of Provera pills many times but the 10 day dose is typically given to induce a period.  You won't bleed for the 10 days that you take them but then you should get a period within a week after you stop taking them.

The only side effects I ever had with Provera were some headaches the first time I took them.

@xan921 - I'm taking pills of medroxyprogesterone (generic provera?).  I have headaches a lot so I'm not sure if the ones I've had today would be because of the medication (took the first one last night) or if it's just normal for me - how long did they last for you?

I think the first time I took it I got 4-5 headaches over the course of those 10 days.  I normally get migraines, not headaches, so I assumed it was the provera doing it to me. After my first round of it I didn't get headaches again from it though.

My period after taking it is always super heavy with a lot of cramps so brace yourself for that although everyone responds differently to it.

  • I took Provera last month to induce my period. I had taken it in the past with no issue and had a normal bleed a few days after I stopped the pills. This most recent time, I had a bleed a few days after I stopped the pills but it was a somewhat light bleed. I checked with my gyno since I wasn't used to Provera causing such a light bleed and she said that sometimes Provera thins the lining and the resulting bleed is somewhat light. I also had more breakthrough bleeding about two weeks after the initial bleed this most recent time.

Thanks everyone!  I've been having light periods since I got off of BC last year, so that won't be too much of a change.  I was actually hoping for the opposite (weirdly) since they've been so light.  Boo.
