Feeling foolish!

I never use my credit cards now that they are all paid off. I couldn't find my debit card awhile back it was lost in my bag and I felt like a fool holding up the line so I swiped my credit card not thinking twice. Well I never changed the address on my account so it still goes to my moms. She knows I don't use it so tossed the bill not thinking. While I was there this week I got the mail for her and found a late notice.

I have a $25 late fee! For a $6.27 purchase I made two months ago! I called to explain and hopefully drop the fee but because I missed one payment before they can't excuse me. Darn darn darn.

I know I am stuck with the fee but is it that high for everyone else? I have a few credit cards but I have never been late on any of them so I have no idea. $25 seems crazy!

Re: Feeling foolish!

  • Unfortunately, I think $25 might be on the low side of late fees any more.  I think my CC charges a $35 late fee (not that I ever intend to pay it late).

Lesson learned...kind of like the $125 ticket I got a couple of months ago trying to be early to work.  I hope they waive it for you!
  • Actually, most late fees are around $25 to $35.

What you should have done is what I have done at times, once you are allowed to make a payment to the balance you do so that it is done and paid for.
  • I do usually pay them off ASAP but I haven't used a credit card since before Christmas and it completely slipped my mind. Lesson learned for sure! I find it interesting that this is a regular late fee price.

  • ugh. that sucks! But yeah, I think you actually lucked out on the late fee- most are worse. I even think my bank over draft fee is worse now!

    Yeah that's about right, unfortunately.

I have an auto transfer set up between my bank and CCs that are for the minimums, just in case I forget to pay one to avoid the fees.

  • I would try and call one more time, sometime a different operator will give you a different response, and ask to talk to a supervisor if you still get a no. Tell them you are never late and see if they can offer this one time. If they won't, threaten to close the card, sometimes they will give in because they don't want to lose your business. Offer to make the payment on the phone for the remaining balance. It's worth trying.

Maybe if you write them they will also waive the fee.  One time we paid our mortgage twice, so when we removed the second one they charged us a $30 fee and wouldn't waive it. But the person on the phone said "if it was a late fee we would waive it" WTF? So I wrote them and they waived it.
  • Thanks for the advice! I will try calling again. I hate being assertive on the phone like this. Haha.

Yeah, that sounds about right $25-35. Unfortunately I think they are pretty strict on the late fees too, but I hope you have some better luck.

  • I have had luck calling before and threatening to close my credit card if they don't take the late fee off.  I charge an average of 2,500.00 each month though so they are probably more likely not to want to lose my business then someone who charges 6.00 a month, occasionally.
