Sparkler Discussion

On my way into work today, they were discussing on the radio letting little kids use sparklers. Someone called in saying that they let their 4 year old child have a sparkler on the 4th and how one of their friends was horrified that they would give such a young child a sparkler. Keep in mind, the child was well supervised (or so they said). I'm curious as to what you ladies think, what age is too young to have a sparkler?

Re: Sparkler Discussion

  • I know one of my friends on FB has a 3 yr old son and he was at his dads on the 4th and I guess he let him play with one and he burnt his fingers. I think that it is a bit young to have a child have one alone even if supervised.

  • i think its none of my business what parents do with their kids, I really have no idea how young is young but I guess just suprised is okay?!

  • We have some "friends" of ours ( I use that loosely) that let their 1 year old do sparklers this year. I think 1 is very young! I think 3 or 4 is somewhat ok if done correctly and under supervision. I also saw a thing on pinterest shoeing a sparkler put through a small hole in a plastic cup. The cup covers your hand so the sparklers don't get you and I think it is a brilliant idea!!
  • We let my 4 year old nephew do a sparkler this year.  I think he also did one last year.  He was under very close supervision.  My sister, me, and my husband were all right by him.  It scared me, but he did well.

  • I'd say 3 or 4 is fine, as long as the parent is next to them. I plan on sticking the sparkler through the bottom of a solo cup, so the cup protects their hands.
  • I think it depends on the kid. I know 4 year olds who are crazy monsters and 4 year olds who are well behaved. I remember burning myself on a sparkler when I was older than that, so I think supervision is key.

  • We always have them for the 4th but I don't let T touch them. Maybe we will at 3 or 4 or maybe we won't. I haven't decided yet. For now, he's content with watching me hold them.
