Ready to give up

I'm seriously ready to give up on teaching. I'm so tired of looking for a job. I don't really seem to be getting anywhere with interviews. Even when I get them, I screw them up and don't get a second one. The only thing I can hope for at this point is for the teaching market to pick up and open up with more jobs. I think until then, I won't get anywhere. I just don't know what to do in the meantime... It's just depressing most days.

Sorry for the debbie downer post. I just am so done with this all right now... and I'm working at the elementary school I interviewed at and they are doing the second round interviews.

  • On a positive note though, the house is going well. We should be moving only a week or two after they originally expected.

  • What d you think is your biggest hang up? The questions? Do you think your answers are blah? I am on the interview committee at work. maybe I can help. You can do this. You are a bright young woman with a fruitful future ahead of you. It isn't that you haven't found a job yet, it's that the job hasn't found you.
  • Try charter schools if there are any in the area. I applied to district jobs when I was in PA and maybe got 1 interview. Even in FL the districts would interview me, but say I didn't have enough experience. Of course I didn't because everyone was telling me that. Charters hired me 3 times. The school days were longer and the technology was almost non existent. We had old slate chalk boards in Philly and whiteboards with projectors in FL. No smartboards for us. Anyway, it was a job and gave me experience. Try charters. You might get lucky. I'll see what I can find for you.

I'm glad the house is going well :)

  • Here is a website for pa charter schools and the page for the southeast.

  • I think teaching and being in schools is so hard. Hope you find something.
  • I hope you find something too. I used to think teaching jobs were plentiful but I can see from all the teachers on our board struggling to find jobs that they are not. Hugs.

  • Alyssa, I can totally relate! I have appied for about 35-45 positions for the fall, and I have only had 1 interview so far and that is for a district 55 minutes away. Also, the position is only part-time. I really hope I get more interviews throughout the summer. I really don't want to go back to subbing. It's so hard right now for teaching jobs. Don't give up! It will turn around, I am sure!

  • I feel like the interview I had on Thursday went well. I just don't know how I want to go for next year now. I have another aide interview on Thursday, but I know I probably shouldn't take it, and should sub instead. But I've basically stopped telling my parents that I have interviews, because they don't understand why I don't get them.

I basically have the problem that I can think through something, but I can't for the life of me answer questions on the spot. Give me ten minutes, and I can give an amazing answer. Interviews don't work like that. So a lot of ums come out, and I can't remember words that I want to use. I even made practice interview questions and answered them all. It helped, but not enough.

  • Can you take notes with you?
  • Notes is a good idea. I have that same problem but adding in long babbling answers with the ums.

  • Oh, I do the long babbling answers too. Do people take notes in? Usually the problem isn't the questions that I already know the answers to, it's the ones I'm not anticipating that are the problem.

  • I personally wouldn't take notes in with you for an interview. Just practice the answers over and over, that's what I try to do.

  • If I had an interviewee come in with small notes about their experiences and answers, I wouldn't think twice.  Especially if they said that they are nervous. To me, it makes them look real.  I wouldn't have paragraphs but a few words.  I would carry it in with extra resumes so it looks like part of the pile.
  • Okay. I'm going to have to give that a try. Thanks.

  • Having interviewed a lot of people I will say that I would feel a little put off if a candidate had to refer to notes during the interview. That would tell me they are not prepared for the interview. However if a candidate asked if it were ok to take notes during the interview I would be impressed.

Don't be afraid to ask for a moment when they ask you a question. If they ask Can you tell me about a time when.... what was the outcome? (or whatever) It is ok to say let me think about that for a moment. I would much rather see a candidate think a question through rather than give me something that is off the top of his/her head.

The person doing the interview knows that you are nervous, who isn't nervous during interviews?! Just take a deep breath and be the best you that you can be. I can tell you I have hired my fair share of people who impressed me with just being themselves and perhaps didn't have 100% of the skills I was looking for.

  • Thanks Am, I think that helps. I really have tried to be myself, and I think it's helping, especially compared to the first interview, but I will have to take some time to think. What is an appropriate amount of time?
