Hard Lesson Learned - Be Careful when scheduling CC Payments

I just needed to vent and hopefully give everyone else a heads up.

Last November, I went to a new dentist who claimed I had all this stuff wrong with my teeth.  He scared me into having some crazy expensive procedure done (which I now believe was unnecessary, because every other dentist has said my teeth are text book).  Well.. it ended up being $600 and I decided to put it on their "interest free for a year" payment plan.  I could have paid it all on the spot, but I thought, 'Why not.. it is 0% interest."  I scheduled paperless billing and automatic payments, and I had it set to be paid off within plenty of time before the interest free offer expired.  Everything was set...so I thought.

Well today... I randomly thought to check it, because I was excited that it would be paid off next month.  I look, and I still owe $300... $250 more than I thought I would owe. Turns out that every month, there had been a delay in the payment processing, and I have been being charged with a $35 late fee every month since November.... all because it was late by ONE day due to the delay!  I'm so mad at myself for not checking earlier, and I'm also mad that this dental procedure that I probably didn't even need has cost me even more money.  I already felt conned by that dental office, and now I feel scammed again. Ugh....

  • Ugg, sorry to hear that. I would call them up and complain....
  • That is terrible! I would call to complain as well.

I would call them and request a refund for the late fees and pay in full to get it out of there. :(
  • I agree with the others. That's horrible. I hope you can get a refund of the late fees.

  • That is so frustrating. I would definitely call to see if there is anything that can be done about the fees.

Stuff like this is why I am terrified of autopay stuff. I avoid it at all costs.

  • You need to call and find out the reason for the delay, if you set up auto payments. Did they let you set up and pay any day you wanted? My MIL has auto payments on her car, but they only allowed her to set up for the day it's due. Even if it's a day or two late, (due to it being a holiday or non business day) they never charge a late payment unless it goes 30 days. We set it up so she would never be late. That's the POINT of auto-pay! I would be raising hell with them. That's a very shady business practice.

This. Our new car insurance will only allow auto pay and it's making me grouchy. I can pay my own bills, darn it! It doesn't work well with zero-based budgeting since I keep very little buffer in my checking account.

OP, I'm sorry this happened and agree with PPs that it's worth fighting. Let us know how it goes!

  • Thanks everyone!  You all convinced me to complain.  They gave me a typical pre-made speech.: "All bills are due on the 2nd with NO grace period.  Transactions take between 3 to 6 business days to process.  The transaction must be fully processed by 11:59 pm on the 2nd, or a $35 late fee will be issued."  I told them that I have never had this problem with any other bills, and they ended up waiving ONE month's late fee.  This is my fault for not checking on the autopay to make sure everything is running smoothly, but I feel like it is shady business practice.  3 to 6 business days for processing is kind of ridiculous.  That means I should have scheduled the payments for like the 20th.  They did give me the option to schedule payment on whatever day, but the form had a suggested payment date as the 2nd.

The more I think about it.. the more mad I get.  I was paying well beyond the minimum payment, so it seems that they would have applied that extra to the next month's bill so that I wouldn't have a late fee.  I think I'll call back again.

Sure, calling back again wouldn't hurt!!  Can you write a letter to them?  I am SURE they are getting those extra late fees from other people, too.
  • That is a despicable way to take advantage of people. Yes, in your case you could have noticed sooner, but what a shady practice. All of my online bills are "submitted" when I hit send, except for H's SL. I wonder how many elderly people they've tricked that way.

Was this through Care Credit or directly through your dentist? Ooo I wish you luck with giving them hell!
  • This was through a "health" credit card that the dentist recommended.  But that dentist was sketch, so I'm not surprised that this care credit thing is sketch.

What makes me even madder is I never received an email saying that was happening.  I got emails saying that my payment had been received, but never anything about my payment being late.

    Absolutely ridiculous!!!

I would call back and specifically ask them what's the point of auto pay if it's not going to post in time? Also, what if the 2nd is on a non-business day or holiday? This makes no sense to me, if it's due on the 2nd and it's being processed on/or before 2nd, there should be NO late payment. There should only be a fee is the payment is rejected for non-sufficient funds.

  • I would use their own e-mails against them and say that you were never informed of the late fees being accrued and if they don't refund all of your late fees you will take this to the Better Business Bureau and have them shut down.

I had Sallie Mae once try to pull this crap on me and I called them up to complain that automatic pay means that their can't be any late fees since it is being paid on the schedule that they set up.
  • What a load of crap! There is no such thing as "paying too early." What kind of idiots do they have working for them? I would still report them for their shady business practices. Make sure you get it, in writing, this account is Paid in Full.

Yeah that's completely messed up.  I mean, sometimes CC companies put that trick in their T&Cs, but it's really something that shouldn't happen.  Most let you pay off as you go.

I was looking at GE Capital about 6 months ago for their savings accounts.  The reviews on those were terrible too.

Glad you got it worked out!

  • Unfortunately, I've heard of this before. We rarely get a second opinion when going to the dentist, but do for a doctor or mechanic, and the less scrupulous ones take advantage..
