WIJFR - Landline (ns)

I'm just going to share my Goodreads review here.  I look forward to more of you reading this so we can discuss.  :)

Even as I type this review, I don't know what my rating is going to be.  My thoughts about this book are all over the place.  I love the simplicity of Rainbow Rowell's writing.  Not BAD simplicity, but just enough description, emotion, dialogue that makes you just want to keep reading and devour the book.

While this book wasn't exactly time travel it was KIND OF time travel and my brain cannot wrap my head around that.  (Which would be one of the reasons I didn't initially plan on reading this book.)  I just...I don't...IT JUST DOESN'T MAKE SENSE!  "If Neal had already proposed to her in the past, then Georgie must have already convinced him in the future."  Huh?  What?  I read this sentence over and over and over and my little brain just can't comprehend it.   I tried to just go with it but...

I couldn't really relate to Georgie and her putting her job before her family but...such is life.  I know some are going to disagree with me on that but whatever.  That's how I feel.

I felt many parts were very real.  "Things were always bad-and always good.  Their marriage was like a set of scales constantly balancing itself."  So very true!  And Georgie's realization of "what the hell are we doing???" when they are about to have a baby.  Yup.  Right on.  I think many adult would be able to relate to issues surround family/marriage/work in this book as it's basically every day life.

I think I'll give it 3.5 stars...maybe round to 4.  It was enjoyable (I just can't wrap my head around magic phones. :) )

I'm not sure if I want to read this.  I loved Eleanor and Park and Fangirl.  Loved!  I couldn't even finish Attachments because I thought it was so bad.

  • Fangirl and Attachments are my favorites. I can't decide between the two.

I enjoyed Landline, but I think my expectations were a little high. I couldn't get on to Goodreads yesterday for some reason but my rating is 3.5-4 as well.

I think maybe my expectations were just too high.  I do plan on giving Attatchments another try at some point!

  • I need to pick this up at some point because of all the good NBC reviews but I was totally turned off by the phone thing in the description.

  • I feel like as an author, Rainbow Rowell totally gets me and it feels as though she writes books just for me. As a writer she is also a huge mentor for me since she writes the type of books that I aspire to write. So saying you don't like something she writes or that it was awful is like a personal insult to me.

I didn't say it was rational.

  • I just got an email from my library yesterday saying that they got this audiobook at my suggestion! For some reason they only carry Rainbow Rowell's books on audio... I'm listening to Eleanor and Park now and hope to start Landline right after! Cant wait!
  • I have to say, I totally agree with your review.  While I still really enjoyed the book, I sometimes had a lot of trouble getting over the magic phones business.  But she's just such a good writer and totally GETS stuff and describes it SO PERFECTLY that I could go with it.  I don't think there are many other authors who could pull off a book with a crazy plot device like this besides Rainbow Rowell.  Landline was definitely not my favorite of hers, but I still really enjoyed parts of it.
