Got a diagnosis

Looks like I'm joining the PCOS camp.  Transvaginal ultrasound is next week.

I know a lot of women have it, but I feel super pouty right now.

Also when the doc mentioned Clomid or Femara, I asked about doing monitoring ultrasounds and she said she did not do them - if she did, they would cost extra and probably wouldn't be covered.  I'm not sure how I feel about this.

Re: Got a diagnosis

  • I'm sorry about the diagnosis. But it is good to know what you're dealing with so you don't just keep spinning your wheels.

Now is definitely the time to find an RE to work with, especially if Clomid or Femara are in the picture. Some women can be easily overstimulated on fertility meds and release multiple eggs, which is how you end up with twins/triplets+. You definitely need to know how many follies/mature eggs you're getting, or if you're not getting any, so doses/cycles can be adjusted.

  • I'm sorry you are joining team PCOS, but at least on the bright side you know what you are treating... And the first step doesn't have to be a jump to meds if you aren't comfortable going that route yet.  I had good success with diet, acupuncture, and homeopathics working with my naturopath to help me ovulate.

If you are more comfortable going the med route, I agree that an RE may be a better option because monitoring seems like the safest approach.

  • I'm sorry about the diagnosis. But I'm happy you have one.

If you're at the point of moving to meds, please switch to a RE. You need to be monitored properly to ensure that the meds are working and not causing issues. I would not continue with a doctor who did not understand what proper monitoring is.

  • Sorry about the diagnosis, but finally some answers... I completely agree with PP's about medications and needing to be monitored by an RE. Just a heads up though, I would look into your insurance coverage now, so you know what you're getting into. The monitoring U/S that your PCP indicated would likely not be covered would be because it is getting billed under an infertility diagnosis. This would likely be the same if/when you switch over to an RE. HTH and GL to you!

I know, I know (and it's what DH is saying too), it's just... poopy.  (I am totally using it as an excuse for some Frappucino action, though.)

Thank you for all the support ladies!  I was disheartened when I heard the doc say that about the ultrasounds this morning... this is the first time I'd seen her (I usually go to a nurse-midwife for my annuals).  Our insurance is through DH's work and they just switched providers, so I called up HR to find out if they could tell me where I can find out what exactly would be covered, if anything.  Still waiting for a call back.

@lindsayandjamie, what did you do for diet?  Any other ladies do similar?

Ugh just called called customer service to check on benefits because the insurance website is useless; got told they will cover diagnosis for IF (since I don't seem to be ovulating, I assume that is what it would be under) but not treatment.  Disappointing but not surprising.  Going to start researching REs tomorrow though.

I'm sorry about the DX but like others have said, at least now you know and can develop a plan to move forward.  I definitely think being monitored while using fertility drugs is a must and if your normal doctor isn't going to do that then it is time to move to an RE.

Moving onto an RE is a big step but there is such a major difference in the quality of care and detail they give to you and your situation.

    Good luck!

In my case we started with eliminating dairy and sugar (but I was also treating some other symptoms simultaneously).  I know @brij2006 has a more prescriptive PCOS diet she was following, but I don't remember the details.  Maybe she can help you?

My kiddo is the result of a pretty strict low-carb diet and the max dose of metformin (2000 mg of the XR).  A low-carb diet is what's recommended for PCOS but there are obviously lots of variations (South Beach, Atkins, paleo, keto, etc.)

Diet isn't enough for everyone, even with metformin, but it's probably worth trying before moving on to the ovulation stimulating drugs.

ETA: And sorry.  PCOS sucks big time. :(
