Kids at the movies

How old were your kids when you took them to a movie the first time? Logan is straight up obsessed with Disney's Planes. We're sitting here watching all of the promos for Planes Fire and Rescue online (thank goodness for our dual monitor!) and have been for the last 30 minutes. He went upstairs to get all of his planes so he could play along with the videos. :) One part of me knows that taking a 2 year old to the movie theater is disaster waiting to happen, but the other part really wants to take him to see Dusty on the big screen.

The other question is does anyone know if there are any theaters that show movies cheaply or have special "little kid" days? That would make me feel better in case he freaks out and we need to make a hasty exit. :)

Re: Kids at the movies

  • We took our oldest dd to see Winnie the Pooh when she was 2.  We brought snacks and she sat still the whole time.  (I think the movie is only an hour long).  My youngest was three at her first movie (Frozen) and she literally did not move for the whole thing.

You know your kid better than anyone.  Has he ever watched a movie at home?  Does he sit still for a tv show?

  • Jake was 3.5 (he was a diehard Cars fan, so we took him when Cars 2 came out)...he got a bit antsy about 3/4 of the way through (but I think Cars is a long movie for kids!) but he did stay.  I brought snacks in my bag and he munched on those.

Liam was 2.5, he went to see Frozen just a few months ago.  He sat like a statue and his hand never left the popcorn bucket, lol!  He LOVED the movie and didn't make a peep.  I think Logan would be fine if he's that much into the characters.

  • We actually don't own Planes at home because he just stops and stares until it's over. He'll be almost 2.5 when it comes out, so maybe we'll chance it. Or maybe just Dad will chance it with him. I can't justify spending that much money on a movie he may not sit through. ;)

  • Mason was about 2.5 when I took him (Lion King 3D I think) - he was a little distracted by the end, but overall did really well.  We took both boys to see Frozen, so Garrett was almost 3, and he did amazingly well.  We were prepared to make a fast exit with him, but he did awesome.  (popcorn and snacks helped!)  I think Logan will be fine, just go in with low expectations and a plan to evacuate, LOL!
  • Rave Cinemas is gross but it's cheap :)  I think matinees are still $5.

I was going to say the cinema formerly known as Showcase North, otherwise known as Rave is super cheap during the day. Ah, memories...

ETA: Cinemark in Robinson is $5.50 on Tuesdays and $5.75 for the first matinee.

Dd was 2.5 when we took her to her first to see Tangled. We have a cheap theater near us that plays slightly older movies so we went there. She was mesmerized and absolutely loved it. Dd is a big movie/tv kid though. So I wasn't really worried and she loved princesses already at that point so it was perfect.

  • Heather’s first movie was Toy Story 3. She was 3 ½. She actually didn’t have the focus to sit through a whole movie until after she turned 3. But once she had sat through a whole movie at home a few times, we figured she would be fine and she was. We also went to a less expensive matinee, so we were prepared to leave if she needed to.

Todd’s first movie was Cars 2. He was 2 years and a few months old. He has always been a screen guy and could stay focused on any show or movie we put on from a scarily young age. He had seen a couple movies at home, and he was fine in the theater. He was a bit more worried by loud noises/perilous scenes, but he sat with me for a while and he was fine.

We go to the drive in a lot to avoid being noisy at a theater but the drive in is so late that it's tough with little ones.  I know there are dollar days at local theaters for kids but I can't find any info with a quick google search.  I also know Cinemark does (or used to do) the $5 Tuesdays at certain locations which I think was mentioned above and $5 first matinees.

Southside Works does $1 kids movies on Wednesday mornings but they are older.

  • Cranberry Cinema does $5.50 Movie Mondays.  (And a free popcorn.)

There are some kids programs with older movies.  I think some may even be free.  Maybe you could try it out for free first and see how it goes.
  • I forget how old EJ was for her first movie. It may have been the Muppet Movie? But her only issue is being quiet (she asks so many questions) and staying in a seat. She STILL gets tired of just being in the same seat through a whole movie. So she usually ends up standing. Since she is under 4ft tall, it is no big deal.  And movies are loud enough her questions. Not to mention when you go to a kids movie they are families and more understanding to a little quiet noise.

DD has never been to the movies. She's never really been a kid who has been interested in them or would sit and watch a whole movie through to the end. It's only been over the past year where she would actually watch a whole movie. I was going to take her for her 6th birthday this year, but she was worried that it would be too loud and said she'd ask them to turn down the volume if it was. When I explained that wasn't an option, she decided she didn't want to go.

I took Jackson to see Cars2 when it came out. He was a little shy of three. I took Michael for the first time right when he turned 2. He was always a better sitter than Jackson, so he sat on my lap and held my hair the whole movie.

I think I heard that the Cinemark theaters in the area are doing $1 kids movies one morning each week. You may want to call them to check on that. It's older movies, but for $1 who cares?
