WWYD: Work/Cat

I have an office cat and I have always been the one cleaning the litter ever since she was adopted by us. Now that I am pregnant I am not supposed to handle litter.

My boss has told me that once I'm pregnant she will start cleaning it but I am only 4 weeks and not sure if she is someone I should be filling in on this. What do you suggest I do or say to my boss regarding this?

Re: WWYD: Work/Cat

  • No one would notice if she started cleaning it since it's just her and I back here with the cat. But I don't have much faith that she would keep this a secret from her husband and son(also work here). She may say she will but I'm not sure if she actually could.

  • @brij2006 - I work with all guys except for my one boss, I guess maybe the one guy I could tell, he would keep it a secret but I'd have to bribe him to clean litter since he despises the cat. That is something I might need to discuss with DH after work. Good thought though!

  • If you can't get anyone else to do it, maybe you can grab a surgical mask and some rubber gloves to wear when you do it??

  • I was going to say what @LuckyAngel07 said but I started my post and then got sidetracked. I don't know if people may think it's odd that you are suddenly wearing gloves and a mask to clean the cat litter though. I hope you figure something out!

  • So if the cat is indoor only the risk of their bring an infection is extremely low. And it takes a full day to change into the infective stage once in the box. So I would say clean the box twice a day and make sure to wash your hands and in all honesty you will probably be just fine.

As a veterinarian I deal with cat feces on a basically daily basis and that won't change in the next nine months. I discussed a titer with my Dr which we are doing, but he first made a ridiculous comment about having "aids" to do that job and then conceded that with good hand washing I would be fine.

  • Oh and if you go the glove and mask route it's best to get disposable and use a fresh pair every time.

  • The only reason I didn't scoop the litter box while pregnant was because my husband thought I couldn't and I wanted to get out of litter box duty for 9 months. Honestly, if you don't have a suppressed immune system, the cat is indoors only, and you are diligent about washing your hands before you touch anything else, you should be fine.

  • @pb&fluff - I think I am going to continue letting my husband clean the box at home. It is glorious not dealing with that twice a week.

At work, I will probably stick with the gloves and mask idea. I might tell my boss at 8 weeks if she doesn't catch on before than.

    Thank you ladies!!!

  • That is awesome! It's also kind of a funny problem to have. I agree you should be just fine if you're careful.
