Talk to me about Metformin

Who has used it? Specifically, who has used it that had anovulation issues? Did you see any improvement? How long did it take before you noticed a difference? Did you have any side effects? What bloodwork/criteria was met before you started taking it? Anything else you want to share about it??

I just sent a message to my new RE inquiring about it. We have one injectables cycle left in the bank (well, not the literal bank or else we'd already be doing it, but in the proverbial "bank". ;) ) and since IVF isn't in our future at the moment thanks to the ridiculous costs and no ins. coverage, I want to exhaust all other efforts to maybe get my body to ovulate without meds. So, tell me all about it.

Thanks :)

In Christ alone my hope is found. He is my LIGHT, my STRENGTH, and my SONG!

T-TTC since Dec 2008. PCOS/nonexistant cycles(anovulation) and endo. HSG in '10 revealed both tubes blocked. Lap surgery in Dec '10 to correct. Failed Clomid/IUI and injectable(Bravelle)/IUI cycles so far.

Re: Talk to me about Metformin

  • I got put on it at an initial dose of 1000 mg.  That really didn't help me any.  Then I saw a new OB and she upped it to 1500 mg and then I started having long cycles on my own.  That combined with the acu is what helped me have cycles and more regular/shorter cycles.

I know my initial OB did bloodwork, but I honestly can't remember what she checked for since it was a while back.

Side effects were just digestive issues when I first started or if I ate certain things.

  • I've been on it for the last few months. I don't O at all.

The point of me taking it, though, was not to make me ovulate. I'm taking it to improve the conditions inside my ovaries.

I started with one pill a day, for a week, and built up to four pills a day. I was effing sick all the time, so they put it back to three.

I haven't had any weight loss (which I'd obviously hoped for) but just hope that it's doing whatever it does to make my ovaries a better environment for growing eggs.

  • I've been on it for 2 years for pcos. I take it to improve egg quality. There are also studies that show women with pcos have higher miscarriage rates, so dr wants me in it through fet based on our history.

I can only handle 1000mg per day. It takes me about a week to get used to it and I have pretty bad digestive issues, coupled with feeling poorly overall. Once I'm over the worst, it's no big deal.

  • I've been on 1500mg of Metformin since last October. My dr. had me gradually increase to my full dose of 1500mg. I took 500 for the first two weeks then 1000 for two weeks then finally got up to 1500. I didn't have any side effects with 500. I had horrible constipation with 1000 but it went away eventually. The only time I really have side effects now is if I take it without food. Then it makes me feel a little pukey.

For the first few months, I was having cycles on it without having to take Provera. They were all over the place in terms of length but I was just happy to be having cycles. Then in April, I ended up having to take Provera. I had a cycle without Provera in early June and now I am getting ready to take Provera again. For me personally, the only time I think I ovulated was the cycle following the Provera bleed. Obviously, I have had mixed results but I know multiple women on the PCOS website I am on have had great experiences with it regulating their cycles.

  • I wasn't completely anovulatory, my cycles were just long.  I started at 1500 mg and it did not do anything for me.  When we started to approach the year mark of TTC, I asked for an increase and we went up to 2000. I started the low carb diet at the same time.  The next cycle was shorter, and the cycle after that was the earliest O I ever had and resulted in getting pg.  I never had any side effects from it at all.

I don't think my results are typical of many (most?) people's, but not unheard of either.

  • I used to take 1700mg everyday. The only time I O'd on it was when I did the low carb diet. That month I got BFP and ended in m/c. After that, I have not ovulated on Met alone.

The side effects were just digestive issues for the first 2 days if I ate greasy food.

I hope you get a response from your RE soon.

I've been on 1500mg of it since October.  They started me out on 500 for the first week and then by week three I was on 1500.  The only side effect I had from it was constipation for a while.  I'm completely anovulatory and very irregular but haven't noticed any change from it.  I also went on high doses of progesterone from December-June to treat something else, so I don't think metformin has even had a chance to work for me...but alas, I still take it.
