Weekends are slow around here

Just for fun! Since things are always slow on the weekends I figured we could do a life/MM plan post to entertain me. However far into the future you would like to go. 1 year, 3 years 5 years, or 10 years. What ever you have a hopeful plan for.

Anniversary

In the next year, we'd like to have enough saved to fully gut and professionally remodel our bathroom, as well as get my student loan paid off.

Within two years, we'd like to have at least $100,000 in retirement, get H's student loan paid off and be in a position for me to stay at home should I choose to do so when we have children.

In five years, we'd like to sell our current home and either buy a house twice the size in the same neighborhood or a home with some land outside the city with enough put down on a 15 year mortgage to make the monthly payments the same or less than what we're currently paying.

It's hard to say for 10 years, it'll just depend what life throws our way!!

1 year - close on the house and remodel the kitchen paying cash

    3 years - save $10K - $15K for kids fund - whatever we don't spend goes into a 529
Take 2 more international trips (after London next month)

5 years - save $10K as a car downpayment for me
                  possibly baby #2

10 years - Probably look to buy house #2,
Be student debt free (probably 7 years, but we would add a year if needed for kids.  This timeline sort of depends on job progression)

When I went to change my screen name it was supposed to be Alyssa72713 but the bump gods must of mixed it up because they used 3. It was supposed to be our wedding date. Haha.

If you want to see a soccer game you might want to look into getting tickets now. Depending on the game they can be hard to come by.

We're going to spend 4 1/2 days in London itself - a half day for the South Bank, 1 day for the Tower of London & St. Paul's, 1 day for Parliament, Westminster Abbey & the National Gallery, and then a day for Buckingham Palace and the British Museum.

We're also going to spend a day at Hampton Court Palace and probably most of a day at Windsor Castle.  If we finish Windsor with time to spare we might check out the V&A or other sites in Kensington.

Then day trips to York, Canterbury, Bath, and Salisbury (Stonehenge tickets for sunrise).  We can't wait!

By getting tickets now I mean - find out what it takes to get tickets!  Some of them book out waaaaay far in advance, and you just want to know when you need to plan on grabbing them or if getting tickets without a membership is even realistic.  For some matches it's not.

I haven't been there yet, but it seems that everybody's #1 must-do is the Tower of London because the history is so tremendous.  You can also get (free) tickets to see the Ceremony of the Keys at night if you book far enough in advance.  That's the ceremony where they lock up the crown jewels.  They've done it every night for over 700 years, and 12 people per night can watch it.  We got tickets to watch it this August last December.

If you like museums, the British Museum is arguably the best archaeological museum in the world.  Entrance is free, which is fantastic (especially if you get museumed-out quickly).  For us, it's a must-see because H and I like that kind of thing, and the US doesn't have an archaeological museum equivalent that's even close.

FYI, most London museums are free (National Gallery, Tate Modern, Tate Britain, V&A, Natural History, Science, etc...).  And most have late hours one night per week - usually Fridays.

Other than that I would spend some time wandering around the Westminster area - see Big Ben, Parliament, the exterior of Buckingham Palace, St. James Park, etc.

We are staying at the Premier Inn London Waterloo hotel.  It's very very close to the London Eye and just across the bridge from Westminster.  We will be a 5-10 minute walk to 5 different tube lines at that location, so getting around should be very easy.  We are paying about 110 pounds per night to stay there during the peak of tourist season.  We chose it for location, price, and because it has air conditioning.  Anyway the Premier Inn chain gets very good reviews from people who stay there.  It's pretty no-frills, but they tend to be located at major tube stops, and people say they are very clean and well run.

There is actually a glitch in the system right now so you can go change your own screen name. Log into the knot and go to your profile page. Search around there and you will find the option to change your screen name. I did this last weekend because somebody on my BMB pointed out I was untaggable- I had previously changed my name from my real name and when the bump gods did it they added a space. If you want to change it, see if the system is still allowing it. You will have to log out and log back in here on a computer before it takes effect.

  • 1 year - bigger e fund, contributing even more to retirement and hopefully DH will get approved for a loan big enough that he can build his own photography studio with a music room I can teach out of and also rent out to other musician teacher friends. Possibly TTC #2 towards the end of next year. We want the 5 year age gap.  Don't want to TTC until DH gets his studio up and running.  I would like to save more $$ before TTC again.

3 year - probably have to buy DH a new car and I'm hoping we are bringing in even more money.  We will have 2 kids and that's our max.

I honestly haven't thought beyond that.

1 - 2 years: keep everything as is until DD#1 is out of day care. Use the extra $850/month for a newer car for DH (2012 or newer Subaru Forester) and add $500/month to the mortgage principal.

5 years: Both girls out of day care ($1,700/month). Newer car for me, gut upstairs bathroom, pay off house by end of 2019. Continue with $5,000/year for each 529 plan.

10 years: Lots of vacations planned with the girls- London, Hawaii, X-country, DC, NYC, Disney, Chicago, etc. 529 contributions done- use that $ to add to 401K/403B. Stay in current house so we can travel/not be house poor.
