capital one card question

DH and I got Capital One credit cards last year- they were offering 0% for 12 months and we had some house repairs that went on the cards. Everything was paid off prior to the 0% going away. Last month, I was charged $25 or so in interest (it was later removed after I sent an email questioning it) and this month, DH is being charged $19 or so in interest. I just emailed them to have DH's amount removed as well since the last payment was applied and credited to the account 5 day before it was even due.
Does anyone have a capital one card and experienced the same thing? I want to cancel them because of this- it's unlike any other credit card we've ever had.

Re: capital one card question

  • How weird! I have a Capital One card and we never get charged interest. I'd be annoyed as well. I have found their customer service to be decent, so I might call and ask a "real person" what the deal is.
  • No, I would call and ask as well

That's very weird.  We've had one for years (for travel), and we've never had that happen.  I have had issues in the past with them mailing me credit cards to old addresses... it's one of my least favorite cards, but I like to have two CC's that don't charge foreign transaction fees when traveling, just in case one gets compromised. At some point I'll probably close ours when I find another one that has the same deal with travel.

If you aren't using them for foreign travel, I would probably cancel them honestly.  It's not the best bang for your buck in terms of rewards.

  •  Foreign travel was one of the reasons we got them too- we're about 20 minutes from the Canadian border and travel there a few times a year. I'll give them a call this week to figure out what's going on. Otherwise, we'll have to look for a different one what doesn't charge the foreign exchange fee (like our citibank cards.. which are our primary cards).

We opened a PenFed card for foreign travel about 6 months ago.  They don't have exchange fees, and it's also a true chip & PIN, which is compliant with Euro card systems.  It also has an online Verisign thing where you have to log in to complete a purchase online.  I really like that because it means people can't steal your credit card info and use it for online purchases without your password. We haven't taken it to Europe yet, but if it works as advertised in London I think we'll close Capital One and see if I can find another Visa or something that we can use as a back-up when we travel.  We certainly aren't going to use the Capital One card if the PenFed card works properly.

I know our AmEx doesn't charge a conversion fee either, but they aren't as widely accepted overseas as Visa & Mastercard.

  • I was just talking to a friend that has a Capital One card. She is really unhappy because they expired in November.  She has called twice and her husband has called twice and they still don't have new cards yet.  They are thinking of just cutting it up and leaving it.

I would call as well.  I am sorry that you are having this problem!
  • Between H and I we have a small stack of CCs that we leverage to our advantage.  We have the Capital One card that doesn't charge an annual fee, and because of that the rewards aren't as lucrative as some of the others, although it does offer the benefit of straight cash back, which we took advantage of when we planned and paid for our wedding.  But right now, we've prioritized others.  All that aside, we've never had any issue with any mistakes on the bank's end relating to billing or anything else.
