3T-ers (and graduates)- dumb question

This is probably really dumb.

Do you think attitude/optimism has any impact on success? I mean, in everything non-medical, I'd say yes. And even in some medical cases. I'm wondering if a less-than-super-hopeful attitude makes our chances any worse.

Re: 3T-ers (and graduates)- dumb question

Personally, for me, no. I didn't really have any hope for the cycle that worked. I think I had just reached the end of thinking that IUI would do it for us. My shock at the BFP was surreal. I really just expected to have to move on to more invasive treatments.

But, I also think if you are very depressed over it all it could if your depression is to the point of impacting your health (severe weight gain/loss, alcohol or drug abuse to mask the pain, etc).

Just not feeling hopeful or thinking anything will work is normal. I just don't think being that way could hurt. But, I'm sure being hopeful is better for your overall health if you can truly get there.

  • I think a positive outlook can be a good thing for your overall health and well being. However, I don't believe it can affect how sperm meets egg or what happens after that.

It never hurts to have a positive outlook. But if you don't, it's not going to affect the outcome at all only your view of the total experience.

I have to agree with PP's. After having so much disappointment month after month, I never thought we would get pregnant, especially on our first IVF cycle. I've continued to be cautiously optimistic (but prepared for the worst) with every little milestone thus far. I'm not sure that's ever going to go away...

That being said, the support and cheering on from others has certainly helped me, and I hope it does the same for you. I've got everything crossed that this is your BFP cycle!

  • I definitely did not think the cycle of my BFP was it for us. Once I spotted during my Lp phase I thought that was it and we were done.
I did however try to think positive every cycle that I got BFN.

I am of the opinion that it doesn't affect fertility.

It's good for your overall health but I don't think optimism affects whether or not an embie will implant.

I am so hopeful for you! If you're struggling, we have more than enough hope for you <3

I only think attitude would make a difference if it actually affected your overall health (ie: depression, lack of sleep, etc).  I don't think feeling negative/positive has an effect though.

Good luck to you ILRV!  We're all cheering for you.

  • Agree with PP, your attitude would make a difference only if it is affecting your physical health.  Good luck with everything!

  • I was convinced it didn't work my BFP cycle, and even though I got a BFP, it ended the way I anticipated. I don't know if it's self-fulfilling prophecy or what, but I have strong doubts that attitude plays a role. I am so hopeful for you, ILRV. So, so, so hopeful.

  • I pretty much agree with PPs. Your overall outlook on a situation isn't going to affect your success or failure (unless the situation hinges on action, in which case your outlook could certainly hinder you acting a particular way). But medically speaking, no, I don't think feeling apathetic about your chances any given cycle will affect if the cycle works or not.

    (PR)
Both cycles of my BFPs, I was mentally checked out. I had no hope or lack thereof; I just wasn't even considering the possibility at that point. Especially the second BFP, since it was the cycle coming off my loss, and I was still pretty deeply upset by the whole situation.

I will be hopeful for you, though! I can't imagine how hard it is to be hopeful for yourself after going through something over and over and still not holding a baby. We're here to be hopeful for you, though.

  • I don't think it has anything to do with how you will be affected medically.  Although I do feel like being hopeful and optimistic will put you in a better mindset about the situation.  When I started the PCOS/GF diet I had to put myself in the mindset that this would work and be worth it.  It was a complete mind over matter type thing for me, and if I had thought differently it would have been easier for me to veer from it and it possibly not affected my cycles.

    (PR)

Our BFP last September was on a medicated cycle, and I was super hopeful that it worked.
In February I had a long cycle that I ovulated in and our timing was perfect.  I tested constantly because I had faith that it worked.
This last BFP I was not positive at all.  We had taken a staycation for 5 days and decided to not prevent during that time.  My cycle got messed up from eating like crap and drinking on vacation and our timing was terrible/ O got pushed back. We even got ourselves back into the mindset that we were going to TTA for another year while I continued the diet and we paid off debt.
