Boy, did this take me forever and a day to pick up. I'm so late to this party, but I finally read it. I absolutely devoured it. There were so many times that I wanted to stop reading just so I could text a friend, or write a post or just sob until I couldn't sob anymore. I had so many feelings that I just couldn't process them all.
I honestly had no idea what I was getting into. Only that a couple of months ago,
@shepherdjel mentioned that she was shocked that I hadn't read it yet, so on the hold list it went. I hadn't even read the summary. It came in on Saturday and I finished it late last night. My eyes are all puffy and red this morning. OMG, the grief leapt off the page. Positively leapt. Whatever dignity I had left, which was not much, completely evaporated after reading one the last poems Lennie left.
"Bails?
Yeah?
Is it so dull being dead?
It was, not anymore.
What changed?
I stopped peering over the ledge...What do you do now?
It's hard to explain - it's like swimming, but not in the water, in light.
Who do you swim with?
Mostly you and Toby, Gram, Big, with Mom too, sometimes.
How come I don't know it?
But you do, don't you?I guess, like all those days we spent at Flying Man's?
Exactly, only brighter."
Gone, no more tears left, I ran dry. I'm extremely fortunate that I haven't had an experience like Lennie did, but whoa was the author amazing at portraying it. I loved every character. Every last one. They were so perfect, and real. I could feel Lennie and Toby's hearts continually break. I could feel Joe's eagerness and youthful love. It was so believable.
I could go on and on, but I won't. It was truly an amazing read. Book hangover, party of one.

"People talk about escapism as if it's a bad thing... Once you've escaped, once you come back, the world is not the same as when you left it. You come back to it with skills, weapons, knowledge you didn't have before. Then you are better equipped to deal with your current reality."
