We are FINALLY Free from...

the hot tub...

Our house we bought in 2012 came with a hot tub the previous owners installed outside underneath an upper deck. It was a 2005 and yesterday a guy and his crew came and removed it and took it away. It was in great shape except for a broken pump and we couldn't get any money for it from him since we're in MN and there's an overflow of hot tubs here, but just that he hauled it off FOR FREE is AWESOME.

We had used it up until the pump went out last fall. With the chemicals, maintenance and added electricity costs to heat it gone...we are SO happy!

So aside from debts, do you gals/guys have any things in your home/property that you think are burdens and want to be free from??

Re: We are FINALLY Free from...

  • Congratulations! H kept wanting to buy a house with a hot tub (we looked at several), glad to hear you don't miss it!

We've got a bunch of little stuff that we've been chipping away at. We also bought our house in early 2012...with a roof from 1989 in northern new england, we just installed new standing seam roofing 3 weeks ago, it's beautiful, and I'm so glad that we won't have to think about the roof again while we're in this house.

I'm in the middle of re-doing our kitchen again (it had bright-red laminate counters from the 80's when we moved in) I painted them last year but the finish didn't set right, the company sent me a new kit (for free) and I'm almost done finishing the counters.  I also moved the kitchen island out of the center of the room and it really opened the space up.  we also installed a new light that lightes under the cupboards much better.

Once gardening season is over, I'll be finishing roman shades in the dining room, a 4 season sun room that faces east, and for the 6 months out of the year when there aren't leaves on the trees it's blinding to eat breakfast in there.  I think the shades, that i'm lining with a flannel insulator, will save us money on heat all winter.

Ha!  The house we're buying has a hot tub out back.  I really really don't want it - it takes up too much space where they have it.  We've left it up to them as to whether they take it or not.  I'm betting not...

It also has a play set which I'm betting they leave.  That's not something I really want either, but we'll probably leave that to save ourselves from buying one if/when kids are in the picture.

These people also have 3 lawn mowers.  So I have this sense we might be left with one.  That wouldn't be so bad, though, because it would save us from having to buy one (as long as it works)!

Honestly anything they leave us that we can't use is being catalogued and stored in the basement until 2015.  Then in January we'll call a good will truck to come to the house and haul it all away.  We'll be able to take it off of our 2015 taxes since we'll finally be able to itemize.

Oh and I forgot about the trampoline.  They have a trampoline out back too.  Take it.  Take ALL of it.

  • We want to be free from our living room set.  We got it for free, but now it is completely falling apart.  We have the ability to purchase a new set (no debt involved) after we close, and want to do so, but we're not sure how to offload this one.  Complicating matters is the fact that it just barely fits through our front door, so the couch may need to come out in pieces.  We'll see how it goes!
  • We are saving up for new windows. I think the windows in our house are original. The house was built in 1945 and the leak air like crazy and most of them are a pain to open and close because they are so warped. I know that once we install them, our heating bills will go down and I would love to be able to clean windows without having to involve a hammer to open and close them as well as me hanging out them to clean!

The joys of having housing through our job means I will take anything I am handed.

However there is this built in desk to the wall in our hallway. It takes up a ton of space and while five years ago it worked great for the overnight shifts we do once in awhile the rules have changed so now it just takes up space. I would love to pull it off the wall but the school wants to keep it functioning for some odd reason.

This! I have the most random room and crap in said room because of my live-in position.

Though I have a storage unit that has furniture in it that my aunt gave me(stuff she wanted to replace with new) when I was in college that I want to get rid of(and get rid of that monthly payment) but my aunt would be crushed and my mother would never let me hear the end of it. I'm going to pull the trigger soon though. I can't justify $40 a month so my aunt who hasn't ever come to visit can feel better.

    Ugh!

Does a lawn count?  Mowing takes up quite a bit of time that I wouldn't mind spending otherwise, plus our yard is just in bad shape so we are constantly trying to figure out how to make it healthier without spending a lot of time or money or using a lot of chemicals.  We also have a lot of bricked areas (patio, sidewalk, garden walkway) that look lovely but are horrible weed magnets.  I'd love to replace them with something else, but I'm not willing to spend the time/money on it right now.
  • Too funny!  We really want a hot tub and just saw a $1500 coupon in the costco mailer.  It's one of the ones we like.  But we are having confliction about weather to get the hot tub or put that money into finishing off a basement which is probably more realistic.  I don't have any thing in our house that feels like a burden to me.

  • I feel ya! We have way too much crap! My MIL has a bit of a hoarding issue so we recently cleaned out her apartment. She pretty much the whole Michaels scrapbooking department in her spare bedroom and never used it. I was able to sell a little at the garage sale, but I still have a ton sitting in the garage.

We have five, broken, old TV's sitting in the garage and I can't find anyone who will take them!

I mentioned putting in a hot tub at our new place but H just laughed at me. He did make a good point. I would get it, use it once, and probably never use it again.

Not a tax professional (not even close) but why can't you itemize this year if you will have the mortgage expenses in 2014?
We aren't going to spend enough in mortgage interest in 2014 to itemize, since we only get a partial year.  We'll still be under the standard deduction for this year.  It's kind of a pain to store that stuff, but it will only be a few months!

  • Does our whole condo count?? If we wanted to sell it today, we would loose about $10,000 not including closing costs so we are basically "stuck" here until the market improves a little bit. We are just dying to buy a house while the market is good and we are finding homes that we like for cheap, but we just can't do anything about it and I'm pissed. Anyone want a condo??
  • congrats on getting rid of the hot tub...
We are finally free from the cost of formula (well at least until we have #2!) but DS is one, so as soon as his tummy is better we are going to milk. Not as exciting as some of the rest of yours but, oh well.
@emily1004 Wish we lived near each other- I would love to buy some discounted scrapbook stuff. I had just gotten started on DS's when we put the house on the market and I had to pack it up. I'm excited to get into our new house and have a place to set my stuff up and work!

We actually used it quite a bit here in MN in summer and winter. But, when the pump died and DH said it would be a $400-$500 fix, we decided that over time it was too much hassle and maintenance to take care of.

Plus, the previous owners of the home, who had the thing installed, while they bought an AWESOME spa back in 2005 (the guy removing it said that the one we have would have retailed for $12k brand new), put it in a bad spot. We have a heavily wooded backyard - it's basically forest backing up to a lake, and we get all the cute woodland creatures who like warm places in winter time (last winter during that Arctic Vortex, we had a night when the wind chill was -54). Anyway, the owners put the spa against the house - like 6" from it and then encased it in decking. Then, they built a deck over top of it (about 12' above it), so it was in the damp, dark, behind the house. When we moved in - it smelled like mouse urine all the time back there until DH and FIL spent a whole weekend uncasing it from decking and cleaning out the interior panels and removing critters.

If the pump hadn't died we would probably have kept it until it did need a major repair.

oh the cost of formula!  DD had to take similac sensitive.  we would buy those big tubs.  We have been rid of diapers for about a year!  It's so much easier to travel with a kid when they don't need bottles and diapers anymore.

Oh, I remember doing a happy dance when we got off formula. The only thing that agreed with DD was the premixed version of Enfamil Gentlease. Everything else made her constipated or so gassy...even the powder version of the same formula. I remember doing the happy dance when we stopped buying it!!!

We're almost done with diapers. She is doing well during the day with potty training. No accidents in 3 weeks. We are still putting a diaper on her at night as she still wakes a little wet. I can't wait until I no longer have to buy diapers!

My goal before we travel to GA in the fall is to be diaper free!!! Travel will be so much easier!

It is so much easier.  We went to FL for 10 days last month and I only had to pack 10 pull ups for her.  No diapers, baby food, formula.  It was really easy.

I swear this is the best part of kids growing up. No more formula then no more diapers. This time around, we decided to go with cloth, and only buying diapers for daycare. But even then, its just so nice that she can go alone and I don't need to change her anymore!
