NBR: My Pretty Woman Moment

You guys!  It was like a scene out of Pretty Woman.  H thinks I took this too personally, but I was SO annoyed.

I was at Nordstrom with H on Sunday and decided to swing by the sunglasses since mine have seen better days .  I was trying on a couple of different pairs and a saleswoman was helping me.  H came over with a pair (with no clue who the designer was or how much they cost) and said, "These are cool."  The saleswoman immediately jumped in and said, "OH!  Those are VERY expensive."

I saw red.

I gave her my best side-eye and said something snotty like, "Price is not a factor in my decision."

Then I almost choked when I noticed they were $500 Chanel sunglasses but at that point, I had to continue playing it cool.

H was dying afterwards because she was trying to make up to me by being super nice and claiming she had no idea I wasn't a natural blonde.

  • "You work on commission, right?"
I write sexy books. I read all the books. I love dresses & macarons.

  • I had a sales lady do that to me when MH and I were looking for engagement rings. I was so fucking irritated at her for acting like she knew what we could or could not afford based on just looking at us. We definitely did not buy my ring from her or that store.

I don't think you are taking it too personally, but my grudge has been holding strong for almost 5 years.

  • The fact of the matter is that yes, money is a factor but screw her for making assumptions about my financial situation.  I just wanted to be bitchy when I said that.  ;)

  • You would think a salesperson of all people would know better than to say something like that.

Especially one working on commission!  Wouldn't you want to encourage people to buy expensive items?

That would piss me off. I get annoyed enough when they're just patronizing.

I have a habit of buying fancy formal gowns (I love them and find excuses just to wear them), and since they're so much cheaper in the US, I usually can't resist browsing. I typically get the sales lady who looks at me in my jeans and geeky t-shirt and says something like, "Well, what kind of event are you shopping for?" My standard reply is "Oh, nothing in particular. Just something new to keep in the closet for when an occasion comes up." It tends to generate some surprise and confusion.

This happens at my work, we have to dress up from time to time for clients and people are like, "Jenn you clean up nice!" No shit asshole just because I was jeans and nerd shirts doesn't mean I don't know how to dress up or enjoy it on occassion.

More than once I've worn a floor-length gown to our office's cocktail-attire Christmas party. Sure I was (knowingly) overdressed, but I looked awesome and had a great time!

  • Some of the most affluent people I know dress like total hobos when they aren't at work. People shouldn't make those kind of assumptions.
