NMMR - What to wear to the spa?

I've never been to a spa and have a little weekend planned this weekend. What should I actually wear when I go to get my services? I'm getting a facial, massage, mani/pedi if that makes a difference. They also have a lunch while you are there which is what I think is throwing me.

TIA!

    Oh fun!

Depends on how shy you are, but I usually wear a light blouse (that buttons) and a some shorts or capris.  Then I either keep those clothes on or I don't, depending on what the service is.  Usually they give you a robe to wear as well, so you stay pretty well covered.

  • I figured they'd give me a robe, and I plan to wear flip flops in case they don't provide those as well. I'm just a little worried that the robe may not fit as I'm a bigger girl.

I think it probably will.  The place I use also has sheets, etc. that you can kind of wrap yourself up in, and they do massages that way - so they only uncover that part they are working on instead of it being a full-on open back thing (like you see in pics all the time).  Honestly I think being completely uncovered the whole time would be really cold.

    Yeah definitely wear flip-flops.

I always wear a button up shirt when I'm getting a facial, because I usually keep the shirt on and just open the neck a bit.  The place I use does lotion all the way down to the clavical, and upper shoulders, but that's it.

Facials are the best, by the way.  I'm super jealous :)

Just try not to get hooked!  Spas are not MM at all, but they are soooooo nice as a treat once in awhile :)

  • Thanks guys!

This is a new experience for me. I'm only doing it to celebrate my promotion, and cashed in my change and D Dollars that I've been saving for nothing for it. Plus my mom slipped me some money for it last time I was home. The spa is a sister property for a Gone With the Wind(my all time favorite movie) inspired B&B so I'll go to the Spa first, then check into the B&B have tea, lounge by the pool, then a friend is meeting me for dinner and drinks.

    I CAN'T WAIT!

    (IMHO) ;)

There is nothing, absolutely NOTHING better than a spa day! (No, they are not MM) BUT if you have the extra money or someone else is paying I say, indulge yourself! I like to have a spa day every couple a months. It comes out of my "fun money" but it's important to me, my health and my well-being. When we go on a trip I always budget for the spa, especially if we're staying at a fancy resort.

In the winter and fall you will find me sporting the terry/velour track suit. It's super comfy. Usually with a pair of uggs.

In the summer and spring I wear flip-flops, comfy capri's and a light-weight shirt. Sometimes I wear a casual maxi dress.

  • Sometime I take what I'm going to wear for the rest of the day, to change into because I like to use the spa's steam shower facilities. Sometime I bring a bathing suit because I like to use the whirlpool. If I take a schvitz (a steam) I just go naked with a towel. The spa usually supplies sandals and a robe. I also bring a book or my kindle and go an hour early. They let me sit in the relaxation room with a blanket and my robe and read a book. It is my favorite thing to do to de-stress!

    Edit: wouldn't let me continue!
  • Yeah I am taking my clothes for later to change into so I can "take a schvitz" afterwards. Check in at the B&B isn't until 3 so I should have plenty of time. If I have even more time to kill I'm going to have them do a full blow out to my hair so it looks awesome for dinner.

I can see this becoming a yearly thing. :)

I 100% agree with Emily that it's the best way ever to indulge yourself.  And since you have something to celebrate, why not?

H and I probably won't make it to a spa in London because we have too many things we want to do, but most of the other trips we are planning involve a spa day or a massage.  They're just so amazing.  We made the mistake on our honeymoon of only booking one spa treatment and booking more excursions instead.  H said, "Next time - more spa time, fewer excursions" (yes, he likes a good massage too).

So it's now something we look for during relaxing vacations, and I try to build it into our budget when we can.

Honestly - I kind of want to spend a week in Istanbul just to do the Turkish Bath/Hammam thing.  They are all over the place.  I would love nothing more than to try a different one each day!  Not a bad way to end a day of site-seeing, if you ask me...

  • spa days are the best.  I do it twice a year which includes a full hour facial and massage.  I also get pedicures once a month during the open toe shoe season.  wear flip flops for your toes.  They give you a robe to wear and usually have a  locker room where you get changed.  I always keep my underwear on with the robe.  Just wear something easy to get in and out of.  I like to schedule my spa days in the afternoon so when I'm done I can just drive home with nothing else planned for the day and relax for the rest of the day.

  • I just wanted to say that I am jelouse!  Have a wonderful time!
  • Great!!!

The massage therapist will usually inform you to undress to your comfort level. As PPs mentioned, your unmassaged areas are always covered by a sheet and or a light blanket. One thing to consider is that clothing in the way of the massage therapist's hands prevents her from doing the proper technique.

So, I always remove my bra and many times the bottoms too, for example.

If you are sensitive to things, and this being your first time, you may want to check and see who your massage therapist is (male or female). Most are women, but you can occasionally see male massage therapists. And, personally, I feel most comfortable and at ease with a woman. You are well within your rights as a customer to ask for a female. Another thing spas do is have you fill out a questionaiire about which areas of your body you wish the massage therapist to focus on and which ones to avoid. If there isn't a section devoted to this, then just write it in as an additional note.  FYI: Some massage therapists do the butt cheek muscles, some don't. So if you don't want any rubbing down there, just say so.

Spas typically have lockers for clients to stow their belongings that come with those little safety pin keys. Or bracelet keys.

I agree with flip-flops. I would plan on a shower and hair wash after the facial and massage...you will have massage oil on your skin and probably in your hair. So also bring whatever you will need to clean up and do makeup if you're leaving directly from the spa for dinner and drinks.

The massage will loosen toxins in your body, so you need to be sure to drink lots of water that day and the next one to properly flush your system.

Enjoy!!! Wow you are getting the full spa day and I am jealous!!! You will love it.

  • Fun! I love when I'm able to have a spa day.
Generally if I'm getting a massage I wear something very comfortable - like yoga pants or something comfy. Since you are going for lunch afterwards, maybe I would wear a cotton or comfy dress.
    Have fun- totally jealous!!!

  • I don't know if your spa has steam showers, but I always end my spa day with a half hour in the steam shower.  just sitting and relaxing.
