Question about exercising...

edited July 2014 in GP Moms

Hey ladies.  I was curious.  I do not normally exercise, ya I am lazy. Lol  But since I am now pregnant, I would like to try to keep my body in as ship shape as possible.  Is it safe to start some sort of exercise regimen to not gain too much weight.

Any suggestions?  Like jogging? I was thinking of starting yoga, but just curious.  TIA xo

And yes I am a little paranoid here.  I just want to make sure I am as safe as possible with everything.  :)

You really shouldn't start any new strenuous activity. If you've been doing it and your body is used to it, then things like running or jogging are perfectly safe. I did yoga that was specifically for pregnant woman. I think it's one by Shiva Rea called prenatal yoga. She has modified poses based on what trimester you are in. Simply walking and swimming are also great. I would definitely check with your doc though before starting any new strenuous exercise regime.

  • Ditto PP - don't start anything new that's really strenuous.  Walking and prenatal yoga are great!  The elliptical is also great, low impact, exercise for pg women, but if you aren't used to doing it, start out slow.

  • I agree with PP.  My doctor said don't start anything I wasn't already used to, but that things like walking and yoga are okay to do.

Ditto PP. I think walking would be fine though. I've also heard that once you are in your second-tri you can do try out new things, but I would ask your doctor first.
  • Ditto everyone else. I would probably only start walking without talking to my doctor first. You don't want to push yourself too far. And try not to be worried already about gaining too much weight. If you eat when you're hungry and stick to the best options you can, that's really what matters. Not the number on the scale.

Yes!  Everyone gains differently.  I gained quite a bit, but it helps to remember you are gaining for a purpose.

  • I agree with everyone. My nurse said to only continue whatever I have been doing but to not change my exercise to a more strenuous workout. Walking, yoga, stationary bike are fine for me. I would start with walking not jogging.

  • I agree with everyone on only doing what you've done. I used a stair stepper, but it was something I did prior to getting pregnant. If you're worried about gaining too much too quickly, you can also use something like My Fitness Pal or Spark People to track what you're eating and to make healthier choices. Once you're into the 2nd tri, remember to add in 300 extra calories.

  • Gotcha!  I was thinking the same thing you all said, I just wasn't sure if I was being paranoid or what.  Thanks girls. I will continue walking my lil puppy and will probably start pregnant yoga in a bit.  I  am not really worried about gaining weight or anything out of the ordinary, just wanted to see if I could do something while pregnant to help for afterwards.  :)

I go in to see my dr today, getting an ultrasound.  FX everything looks great!  I will talk with her about my concerns today!  Thanks again girls.  I love hearing your views on things.  It helps with things. xoxo Happy Thursday

  • @cloudymeatballs1‌ if you do a regular yoga class my advice is to make sure the instructor knows you're pregnant so she can help you with modified poses. If your in a prenatal yoga then you should be fine.

  • I was doing yoga, but it has been a month or so. Lol so I would be starting a prenatal yoga class.  :)

I do remember going to hot yoga and seeing very pregnant people in there and thinking, this cannot be good for you.  Lol, I mean, I felt so worked, I cannot even imagine doing that while pregnant.  Crazy. haha

    Thank xo
