When you guys redid the kitchen in your old house, did you replace the cabinets? If so, did you do it yourself? I know you guys did a lot of work on your own. We're planning a remodel on our kitchen and H is wanting to install the cabinets himself to save on cost. I was just curious as to how difficult it would be. We looked at IKEA cabinets and some from Home Depot, and Home Depot will actually be cheaper without install, and we won't have to assemble them ourselves!

  • Yeah, we did everything in our house ourselves except install the granite countertops.  It really wasn't too hard.  The advice I can give is to have a level, a ledger board and watch plenty of youtube videos.  Install the uppers first so you have standing room.  Then, install the base cabinets.  Make sure you screw into the studs and have at least 2 clamps to hold them straight and together.  Oh, and measure, measure, and measure.  Then, measure again!  It would also be good to either rent or buy a table saw in case you need to trim down your filler pieces.

We bought our cabinets from Lowes when they were running a 20% off sale (which they seem to have every couple of months).

  • Awesome! That sounds exactly like what we're hoping to do. I'll make sure and share that information with H. I never would have thought to install the uppers first. My old roommate works at Home Depot in kitchen design, so the price she told us is for when they do their 20% off, so we'll definitely be waiting until then to get the cabinets.

  • Good luck!  And feel free to ask me any other questions.  Once you get the first one or two up, it goes by faster.

And btw - your siggy pic is freaking hilarious!!  I can't stop laughing at it!!

  • haha, thanks! It was in a buzzfeed post about "people who are probably dead now" and they were like, yep, that baby is probably dead.

I'll let you know if we run into any questions! We weren't planning on doing it until next summer, but we may do it sooner if the 20% off hits before then

  • @xxjen015, definitely shop around.  We initially went to Home Depot and were planning to get our cabinets through them.  The quote was ridiculously high and it was during a sale.  We're getting more cabinets from a local place and spending less than half of what Home Depot was going to charge us.
