Eye doctor suggestions - west/south of the city

DH needs to get in for an eye exam and new glasses. Suggestions on an eye doctor west/south of the city? I'm fine with a chain place as long as they are reasonable as well. We used Pearl once before and they seemed a little pricey.

  • I use Lenscrafters and have always been happy. I don't know what they charge though since my insurance covers my exam. As for glasses, they always have a special and if you have AAA, you get a discount.

  • I use West Allegheny Eye Care across from West Allegheny High School.  I'm not sure about their prices, because I have vision insurance, but I think my doctor there is awesome.

  • Kris - they'll let you use your insurance for the exam and then do the AAA/special for the glasses? He gets a little coverage on glasses, but it seems like sometimes their specials are better.
  • Yeah, the eye doctor basically rents space. The only thing you have to get from them is contacts. They then give you your prescription to do whatever you want with.

If you ask, Lenscrafters will work pricing up both ways with insurance, AAA, or any specials they are running to see which is better. My insurance is pretty good($100 off frames, basic lenses covered) I usually only have to pay for the "extra" coatings. One year I used my benefits on my sunglasses and paid OOP for my glasses because it worked out cheaper that way.
