LASIK?

Anyone have it or thinking about it?

I have bad eyes, glasses since like kindergarten and have been wearing contacts for 22 years! My dad had PRK done over 10 years ago and loved the results (although not the recovery). He has been trying to convince me for years.

But the whole idea makes me nervous and worried. What if they screw up! Plus it isn't cheap.

What is making me really consider though is that my contacts are being discontinued in 6 or so months. I've tried other contacts in the past and don't love them. I have a steep base curve (8.3) and there are hardly any other contacts with 8.3. So other ones don't feel comfortable on my eyes. I also have had huge issues with deposits the last several years that has really gotten me down about wearing contacts.

I'm thinking of stocking up on my contacts to get me through a couple years and in the meantime seriously consider LASIK, see if I'm a candidate and start saving up. IDK I'm still just really nervous about it and freaked out (I will definitely need Valium!!). But I am so tired of my bad vision, sick of uncomfortable contacts and now the best ones I've found will no longer be available.

Oh and I live in an area with a really great surgeon. I already know I would go to him if I do it.

Anyone else feel conflicted too? Anyone have it done want to share your experience?

Re: LASIK?

  • I love the idea of not having to mess with contacts or glasses.  I have some type of hormonal dry eye thing, so wearing my contacts have become somewhat uncomfortable.  But, the thought of having lasers shot into my eyes (or whatever they do) really scares me.

  • My ILs have both had it done, along with a few other people in their family. They kept trying to get K to do it but he is hesitant like you are and doesn't really mind his contacts.  Messing with my eyes makes me nervous as well (though I am farsighted so only need glasses for reading/computer stuff).

I did it 10 years ago. It's the best thing I ever spent money on. My vision was -800 in each eye prior to the procedure. It was amazing to wake up the next morning and be able to see without glasses. it took a few days to get to 20/20 vision, but by the next morning I could see well enough to function.

I had a slight cornea scratch that took about a week to heal, and it was a little itchy, but otherwise I didnt' have any problems or complications. I'd do it again if I needed a touch up.

My husband had it done probably 3 years ago.  I would highly recommend it.  It has been so awesome for him.  He never wore contacts so to not have to deal with glasses when he plays sports and to be able to wear sunglasses is just wonderful.  He's not had any problems since he had it done.  Keefer and I got to watch the procedure and it was a little strange to watch but the recovery wasn't too bad and it was all so worth it in the end.

  • I had it done 2 years ago. Best thing ever and totally worth every penny . I was pretty blind , -7.5 in both eyes, and the minute I got up from the operating table I could read the bottom line of the eye chart. And my eyesight has been perfect ever since. I used Care Credit to pay for it - you have a year or 2 to pay it off depending on the dr.

I do have a friend that had it done and has had problems- however she had astigmatism and very large pupils and they did not recommend she have the surgery and she had it anyway . So she wasn't a good candidate but ignored their advice. If they say you are a good candidate then go for it.

I had LASIK about 5 years ago and it was worth every cent! Both of my brothers and my aunt have had it done as well. They even had an option of 0% financing for a year so I did that and after what my insurance covered, it wasn't so bad.

I was told I needed glasses around 1991.  I hated the glasses and contacts so as soon as I heard about LASIK I knew it was for me.  In the late 90's I was getting old enough to do it and my RX hadn't changed for several years so I did it in 2000.  Eyes are still good today and I love it.

I did take the Dr. prescribed Valium the day of and all was good with my nerves and the procedure was short.

If you save up I recommend then moving the money into a flexible spending account to get the tax benefit.

The only side effect that I might have is when driving down the highway it takes me like a second longer to focus on the signs coming up so I can't read them as fast as some other people read them.  I still see them just fine in the timing that is reasonable to read a sign.  I'm not sure if this is actually caused by the surgery though, the Dr. offered it up as a potential side effect but it might be just getting older or something.
  • I went for the consult a few years ago and something about my corneal tissue was to thin or thick or something. So I was not a candidate. Now my eye doc told me I should try again. And now post baby I probably will. A friend's hubby had it done over the winter. He can't say enough great things about. My vision is horrible. I would love to be able to wake up and see.
  • Thanks! This is all encouraging to hear! I signed up for the dr's seminar. They go over everything and take a tour of the facility and you can sign up for consultation for a later date. I think I'll at least do a consultation so I can see if I'm even a good candidate. I have been told I have dry eyes in the past although they've never caused me problems and I have some health issues, so it would be good to just know if it's even an option and I can go from there.
    Thanks!!

  • I had it done 5 years ago and am happy with it.  However, I never had dry eye issues until after I had Lasik.  It's not a huge deal, I just have to put in eye drops as soon as I way up in the morning and then I'm good for the day.
  • I had it done 10 years ago and it was worth every penny - absolutely no regrets.

Check with your health and vision insurance to see if they offer any kind of discounts and see if your doctor offers any kind of financing or look in to Care Credit (you can use Care Credit at your vet's office too if they take it).

    Good luck!!
