Anyone get rid of cable?

This has been a discussion in our house lately. If it were up to Tim it would have been done years ago, but I'm obsessed with my tv and Logan loves Disney Jr. My friend has a Roku and Hulu Plus and loves it. We were talking about sharing our Netflix with her in exchange for the Hulu Plus. It's just so much more cost effective In the long run!

I guess I just still feel really clueless about this. Has anyone done this? Any product or service you'd recommend?

Re: Anyone get rid of cable?

  • I'm curious to read responses to this, because I know a number of people who have ditched their cable and are now using multiple devices to get their TV fix.  I guess my concern is how much of a hassle is it, and also, if you still have to use multiple devices/subscriptions to watch things, then still pay for your internet access on top of that, how much are you saving?

  • I am with Emmy on this one. You still need internet and to subscribe to various services. Would it be cheaper to go to a more basic cable package?

We did a year or so ago. Honestly we don't watch much tv and very rarely actual cable. It always felt like when I wanted to watch there was nothing on anyways. My hangup was top chef on bravo since I couldn't watch it anywhere else but buy. But I ordered on amazon and that was cheaper than cable! Plus it just came to hulu with all their seasons so I'm assuming they will have new episodes this season!

We have hulu plus, amazon prime (had that anyway) and Netflix streaming and DVD (had already). With all that I feel we have every thing covered. Plus we have the basic channels (NBC cbs abc). We have 2 rokus and can use dh's gaming system so our main tvs are hooked up.

I don't miss anything but we didn't have full cable (show time HBO) anyways. We always had to wait for new seasons of shows from there.

I feel like I watch more tv now actually because I've been searching for things to watch and get hooked!

If you have a specific question let me know

We already had Netflix and amazon prime so the only addition for us was hulu which is cheap. We did get the roku but we could just use gaming systems we already had,

We saved quite a bit each month because our cable kept increasing. But our internet has been creeping up so that's been cutting into that. But I imagine our cable would be too still.

You do have to look at what you get through cable because package deals could make it less favorable to just go down to internet.

  • I have thought about this too, but then when people start talking about hulu, chrome, or whatever else is involved, my brain shuts down because I am confused.  Mostly I just want to know if I'd still be able to watch Real Housewives, Gray's, etc. whenever I want to and not have to wait for it to be on some website to stream or whatever.  I don't even really know what streaming means (is it a fancy word for watch?), so that is how clueless I am about this.

Also, if there is any remote chance of it interfering with sports, then I would fear for my marriage, lol!

  • So you still get the regular networks with the Roku? My friend mentioned she hadn't watched The Bachelorette yet bc she needed to wait for it on hulu. That scared me. Lol!

We kept very basic "cable." It's not through roku just our tv. We don't have a cable box or anything. Basic cable for the main channels (ABC, Cbs nbc) is pretty cheap. I think you can pick up some off the airwaves without but I think we have actual basic because it's cheap. So I guess technically we didn't get rid of everything but it's not much. And if we got rid of that I'd be fine.

If you got rid of everything you could watch most shows from basic networks on hulu plus. But you do have to wait a day. Honestly that doesn't bother me. There are plenty of times I am busy or fall asleep and miss an episode of Grey's, etc and just catch it the next day on hulu. And if you start doing it that way it won't feel any different. Like if you always watch greys on Friday you are only waiting a week each time.

You can get an antenae for broadcast channels. Nathan's buddy has one and he says it works well. Its about $40-$50.

We do have a Chromecast, but for some reason its hates our internet and I have been to lazy to fix it. When it works it is awesome, no bulky box and it was $35 at Wal-Mart. It lets you stream from your tablet or phone. Right now you can stream Netflix, YouTube, HBO GO, Hulu Plus, Pandora, Google Play Movies and Music

If you got rid of everything, you could watch greys on Hulu the next day. It if you kept just the basic network channels you could still watch Greys. I don't know about real housewives. That's bravo right? They did just allow some shows on hulu which they hadn't before. But I'm not sure if that's limited to previous seasons or will be new.

Streaming is basically getting it through the internet while you watch. You aren't downloading it first and then watching. You stream from the internet while you watch. If you have an internet issue while watching, it would be interrupted.

As for sports that could be an issue depending on what he watches. If it's local stuff and you keep basic channels then it would be ok. But if he loves espn that could be an issue. Back when dh watched a lot of sports it would have been a problem. But since we had dd he rarely watched anything

  • Ok, so I guess the real question is, who can give us a rundown on the actual cost?  What do you pay, total, for your streaming services, your basic cable package (if you still have that), and your internet per month?

Dh does most of it so I don't have all the #s. For netflix it's 7.99/month for streaming. We also do 9.99/month for mailed DVDs (7.99 if don't do blu ray). There are still a few shows we watch that aren't streaming. We had both of these before cutting cable so for us this wasn't an additional cost. Amazon prime is $79/year although it went up to $99 for new and renewals (not us yet). We had this before cutting cable so again, not an additional cost. We buy a lot on amazon so it's been worth it for shipping. I don't think its necessary for shows/movies so I wouldn't recommend it anyways.

Hulu plus is 7.99/month which was the only additional cost for us.

If you don't have a gaming system or other player already to use, you can get a basic roku for $50 (onetime cost). Depends on how many tvs you have and want hooked up to how many rokus you might need. We have 2 but really only needed 1. We have gaming systems hooked up to other tvs that use it. Also our blu ray players can do netflix streaming on a couple of our tvs (wouldn't be able to do hulu or amazon prime).

As for how much you save on your cable bill...you'd have to call your own to see. Totally will vary. I'm im a different state with different provider so wouldn't be comparable. Let me see if I can ask dh though how much we saved.

  • I would love, love, love to cut the cable, but Sean's big into sports and I'm not sure how that would work:/
  • I am in the same boat with Sports. If it were up to me we would ditch cable, but Hockey is on Root Sports. I am pretty content with reruns of Law and Order SVU.

Exactly! Steelers games not such an issue since they're usually on local TV, but Pirates/Pens games cause more of an issue with a lot of games being on Root. Throw in college football and I think that I'm stuck with cable for the long haul :/
