Luckystar

what were some of your other symptoms with your thyroid? I feel like I shed hair like crazy and when I brought that up at the doctor, she mentioned thyroid. We did the basic metabolic panel and I was very vitamin D deficient, but she said everything else was fine. I thought one of my thyroid levels was the low end of normal (T4, free count was 1.0 and the range listed .8-1.8). I've been taking Vitamin D supplements and while I feel less tired - I'm still shedding like crazy. I didn't question her on the thyroid as I figured she was looking at my results, but now I'm wondering if I should bring it up again...

Re: Luckystar

  • I was super exhausted! I was in college at the time and would sleep 12 hours at night and still need a nap during the day. I was freezing! It wasn't that cold in our place but I would wear layers of clothes (I even would run a blow dryer in my socks to warm them up before I put them on) and would sleep with down comforter.

I did shed a lot of hair too, but wasn't something I really thought too much about at the time.

What tipped things to actually get on meds was that my dr actually felt my thyroid (originally didn't see me just gave me lab slip) and it was enlarged and I had nodules. I also have antibodies so I would eventually be hypothyroid at some point. So they started me on meds to shrink nodules. Then I started going to a dr who worked based on symptoms and not just numbers. I started out on a very low dose of 25mcg and then kept increasing. I think I went up to 100mcg and stayed there for awhile. I'm currently at 125mcg.

1.0 is on the low end of normal. Do you know what your TSH was? My T4 the last two times it was checked was 1.5 and 1.6 (range is .9-1.8). I haven't had a dose increase in a while so those numbers were good for me. They didn't test T4 that much in the beginning so I'm not sure what it was when I was having symptoms. I know my TSH needs to be about 1. Anything over 3 and I start feeling bad even though my labs range is 4.2.

  • The shedding was what kind of got me started wondering. It's always been a joke how early I fall asleep, so I never really thought of that til she mentioned it. I have mild ankle swelling at the end of the day as well, which she said can also be indicative of thyroid issues. She did feel my thyroid and said it felt okay.

My TSH was 2.66. Also random question - does it matter what time of day the bloodwork is drawn? I read somewhere that it should be drawn early morning for the most accurate results when it comes to thyroid testing (I wasn't told any timeline, so I did it at lunch).

She did tell me to follow up if I didn't feel better after a few months, so I'll probably chat with her when I go in for my flu shot in the fall.
  • I have heard the morning thing too. I don't know how much difference it really makes. At this point I try to be consistent and do it at around the same time and that is usually morning.

The TSH isn't bad. It's higher than I like for myself but could be ok. Certainly low enough that most drs wouldn't treat. I think that it's something Id revisit and have tested again if you are still having problems. Did she test for anything else? Isn't hair loss common in anemia too?

  • That's a good point on the consistency.

I agree - I think I'll revisit but not worry. I looked again and it was a comprehensive panel. So my b12 was tested, hemoglobin, etc. The only thing that was truly out of whack was my vitamin D. I will say I have a mirena IUD and have read that hair loss can be a side effect of that as well.

Hmmm...I have mirena as well.  I wonder if there is some connection.

  • How long have you been on vit d? Is your level better? My vitamin d was low too last year.

  • @amyjoy18 - I started researching mirena side effects and am a little freaked. I kind of can't wait to get it out to see if it really was my issue (need DH to get the big V first).

@luckystar2 - I've been taking 1,000 IU daily since May. I haven't been re-tested yet, but I do feel a difference from prior to taking it. Mine was 15, so very low. I'm interested to see how much it has rebounded once we do follow up work.
  • Mine was around 20 And I take 2000 a day. Would be good to get it rechecked, it might still be on the low side.

I told DH that the big V is looking to be in his future.

  • I'm going to butt in to say that I had a horrible time with hormonal birth control, and I tried several different kinds (3 kinds of regular pills, low dose pills, depo, and nuvaring). After that I insisted on a Paraguard IUD, even though my dr tried to push Mirena. It wasn't a pleasant experience, so she isn't my dr any more, and I'm really glad I stuck to my guns. After about 6 weeks, I felt incredibly better.
