Anybody else affected by Highmark-UPMC split?

DH just had a meeting with his employer yesterday.  They are going to offer 2 plans for employees now, rather than just one.  They were Highmark in the past, now they will offer Aetna in addition to Highmark, because Aetna will give members access to UPMC/Highmark hospitals as well as UPMC/Highmark docs.  I know that Aetna's coverage isn't as good in terms of prescriptions, etc...but, we are thinking of switching from Highmark to Aetna because of the access to both networks.  I am very happy with Highmark, though, and really hate the idea that I have to switch to keep a doctor or have access to a hospital.  Anyone else in the same boat?

  • Brian will be (the kids are on my UPMC plan, so we won't be affected)  Brian currently has highmark but sees all UPMC doctors...he will just go ahead and switch his doctors, he doesn't really go to the doctor enough to really care all that much.  I'm grateful that it's not the kids, I would be sad to have to switch pediatricians :(

  • I have to switch PCP, Nathan already did. The Allegheny County Schools stayed with Highmark. Eh, I am not a UPMC fan anyway so it isn't a huge deal. I have never had a great experience at any of their hospitals and much prefer West Penn or St. Clair.

  • Kind of. We switched to Highmark last year but my OBGYN was UPMC. I switched jobs, so decided to go ahead and change OBGYNs for one closer to my office. I went ahead and went with one more affiliated with Highmark just in case this mess happened. Wasn't a huge deal - but I can see where it could be for some.
  • We were last year when I changed jobs & went on DH's insurance which is UPMC (he works there).  So I had to say goodbye to my Ob/Gyn of 26 years which sucked.  The only good thing is I was done having kids otherwise I wouldn't have switched.  So far our other doctors all take UPMC.

  • Sort of...we have anthem blue cross/blue shield but apparently upmc isn't going to take that either.  The girls go to Children's Community pediatrics, but I was told they are honoring Highmark until 2022.  I followed my ob/gyns to West Penn when they left UPMC last year.
