School Snack Ideas

Mason is going to a Kindergarten jump start program for the next few weeks.  We are supposed to send him in with a snack, but the snacks cannot contain nuts, lactose, or fruit.

He is a big fruit eater, and doesn't really eat any veggies, so that eliminates most of our usual snacks.  We have Pirate Booty, which seems to meet all of the requirements, but I would like some variety and I am drawing a blank!  I also don't want to unkowingly send something in that is allergy related.

Re: School Snack Ideas

  • Wow, that's tough.  No fruit really eliminates a lot of great choices (raisins, dried fruit).

    Pretzels?

  • ??  I'm curious as to why no fruit?

All that's coming to mind are crunchy things, like pretzels, goldfish, etc.

  • I'm curious about the no fruit thing, too. That seems odd to me...
And what do they mean by lactose? Does that disqualify cheddar pirate booty or just yogurt?

Ideas - Pretzels, bagel chips, whole wheat bunnies, sunflower seeds or sunbutter on crackers (check labels, sometimes but free and sometimes not), sun chips, dry cereal (many are nut free), granola bars (trickier to find nut free)

Everything else I send involves fruit...

  • Thanks for the ideas!  I thought it was a strange list as well.  I didn't really read it until I got home, so I wasn't able to ask anyone for more details.  The program is run by Americorps (or something like that, I forget.  Mom of the Year!), so I'm hoping once we move to the actual school that they'll be more descriptive with their allergy restrictions, or offer a list of some safe snacks.

I guess the Pirate Booty is not safe then?  Maybe I'll just send pretzels and water every day.

There is a child in Garrett's class who is allergic to oranges, so we don't bring in oranges, but we can still bring in other fruit.  Maybe there were a few different fruit allegies, so they just eliminated all fruit?  I don't know.  Either way, I really feel for the parents and children with allergies!

  • Is he supposed to bring enough to share with everyone?? I understand the nut thing but lactose and fruit don't cause airborne allergens, right? Would Goldfish crackers work?

  • No, the snack is just for himself.  It's only 3 hours a day, so I'm not even sure why they need a snack to begin with, lol!  I'm guessing since it's such a short program and it's through AmeriCorps, that they are just being overly conservative.

I'm going to alternate between goldfish and pretzels!

I can think of citrus allergies may be why there is a no fruit rule.

Graham crackers are great and you can try sunflower butter instead of the nut butters.

eta: I see someone covered the orange allergy. Also I have seen strawberry allergies.

Allergy parent chiming in with ideas. This snack thing isn't easy. Thank you for being thoughtful about it, we are often asked for ideas for our sports teams and other groups, so off the top of my head... Goldfish contain dairy, unless you buy the pretzel flavor I think. I realize not all of these are the healthiest: Graham crackers Teddy Grahams Some Annie's bunny grahams These goldfish grahams: http://www.amazon.com/PEPPERIDGE-Goldfish-Crackers-300-Count-Pouches/dp/B003SKWA1G/ref=sr_1_3?s=grocery&ie=UTF8&qid=1406299760&sr=1-3&keywords=Goldfish+Graham's&dpPl=1 Club crackers pretzels- we vary type for variety's sake Pirate Booty Veggie flavor only (we buy on amazon) Pop Chips-some favors Wowbutter is soy-based and cheaper than sunbutter as a PB alternative Is Popcorn allowed? You can also make your own muffins-a search for "vegan" will get you to many lactose free recipes for carrot muffins, zucchini, etc if your little one likes baked goods. We use mini pans and freeze. Aldi Gluten Free snack bars are basically Enjoy Life bars that are free of the most common allergens. Avoid the berry flavor, though. Edit: so sorry for the formatting! I'm on a mobile...
  • Also, cereals like Chex, Cheerios, and Puffins work, and you could make your own snack mix with them.
  • fig newtons? graham crackers? tortilla chips and guac? hummus and chips or veggies?i was gonna say applesauce but i guess not.
