We're looking for a house cleaner...

We hate cleaning, and it's not terribly expensive to have someone in every couple weeks.

For those of you who have one, what should I ask potential cleaners?

My first concern is finding someone who is comfortable with big dogs, but I'm not sure what else to look for!

Re: We're looking for a house cleaner...

  • I cleaned for years after college! I worked for my aunt and loved it.

    I would want to know:
    1) is it the same people coming every time?
    2) what exactly do they clean every time and what is extra? For example, we pulled out couch cushions and swept the couch every time, but washing windows was an extra charge.
    3) do they bring their own products or use yours? This includes cleaning products, rags, sweeper, paper towels, and bucket.
    4) do they clean hardwoods on hands and knees or by mop? The former is more effective.
    5) do they charge more at holiday time?

I'm sure I'll think of more haha.

Will the dogs be out or in a cage/closed off room? It would make me nervous to have them out b/c of them getting into the buckets, getting clean floors dirty, or getting too anxious about new people and the noise.

  • We were just discussing getting someone to clean once we move. I am a terrible housewife and a friend just told me she had a cleaning lady who was very reasonable, So far DH's only questions were cost and how much they'd clean. I figure if they do the living room, eat in kitchen and rec room we'd be happy.

I'll clean your house.  It'll cost you one round trip plane ticket from Maryland to Canada.  I will give your animals lots of love, free of charge.
Does the cost of one round trip ticket cover you cleaning every two weeks?  If so, that's a great deal!
