Moving to Delaware ideas needed

Hi ladies, my family will be moving to Delaware and I am looking for ideas on areas. We are a young family and I am looking for great areas to raise kids! Towns, neighborhoods, all suggestions welcomed because we know nothing about Delaware! Thank you in advance!!!

Re: Moving to Delaware ideas needed

  • Hi, and welcome! I'm live in Middletown, and have basically grew up here. The Appoquinimink school district is awesome, a lot of people move here just for that. I don't have much experience with other areas in the state, but anything in the Middletown, Odessa, and Townsend area is worth checking out.

  • Thank you! I will look at those areas!
  • Hi there! Welcome to DE :)  What brings you here?

We moved to Odessa back in January and really couldn't be happier here. It's a really great area. We got a great house for our money in an excellent school district and we've met a lot of awesome families here to hang out with.

Let us know if you have any specific questions!

  • Thanks for the Odessa tip. We are moving out of jersey because it is just too expensive! We still want to remain in driving distance of family though, so Delaware it is!
  • My husband heard good things about the Lewes area, but someone else told us most of lower Delaware is retired folks. Any insight?
  • @Kerrie11378 - My parents live in Ocean View, which is about 20-30 minutes south of Lewes. It's a nice area but there are a lot of retired people. I don't know a ton about the area but I do know the schools are good there so I guess there has to be more than retired folks there!

I'm not in DE anymore, but lived in Wilmington. North Wilmington has a good school district (Brandywine) and you can get a lot for your $$. Not as much as further down, but if you're trying to stay close to Jersey, North Wilmington is a great option.

Are you going to look for jobs in DE or are you going to commute?

    And welcome :)
  • I live In Bear, but have lived in Wilmington (not city) and Middletown.  Do you or your H have any jobs lined up?  That could impact where you need to look.

  • We don't have jobs lined up yet. My husband is military so we are hoping something can come up in Dover maybe. Honestly we are just trying to get a fresh start and figure it out when we get there. I am leaving my job as an elementary school vice principal. Hoping with the lower cost of living I can stay home with the kids for a little while. My husband is willing to do anything, sell cars, Home Depot, whatever until we find some ground. Thanks for all the good tips. We are going to do a drive down Wednesday to look at neighborhoods.
  • Are you meeting with a realtor? If you want to let us know what neighborhoods you are looking at, we might be able to give you some insider info. ;)

We aren't meeting with a realtor yet. Thanks for the offer. I may be posting from the road Wednesday! From what I've read online I think we are going to be looking in the Middletown area. Hopefully my husband can find a job too soon! Anyone know of any decent companies looking for HR or any pseudo law enforcement type jobs? Maybe even sales? :-)
  • Hi! I'm a Jersey transplant too! My husband and I moved to North Wilmington 3 1/2 years ago.

  • @meggles114‌ any tips or suggestions? What part of jersey?
  • Camden County- near Cherry Hill.

We love it around here in N Wilmington, it's close to a lot of shipping areas and it's still really easy to get to our friends and family that are still in Jersey. There is a lot of real estate up here too. It's a little more expensive up this was as opposed to further south in DE, but the property taxes are SO much lower than anywhere in NJ we would have looked when house hunting.

    Good luck with every thing!

@Kerrie11378  Is your H in HR? Has he been in recruting before?
  • Hello and welcome!

I live in Hockessin (well, technically, but it's kind of more like northern Pike Creek), which I love because I feel like I'm close to everything.  I did a little Googling and found this:

Have you thought about renting for year to get a feel for the state and what's available?

Jobs in the MOT area can be scarce.  Most people that I know commute to Wilmington or Dover.

I just thought of this- pseudo law enforcement...I know that one of the armored truck companies is out of Stanton (or one of those little places right there). I don't think it pays much, but it could be something
  • @s517‌ that would be great. We saw a few of those posted and all said you needed a red card? I figured we could figure that out on our day trip tomorrow . And he was a recruiter for the army for years and now works in what is essentially the hr department doing quality control checks on new recruits from recruiter to shipping off.
  • Has he checked USAjobs.gov? He should get veteran preference for being army. I work on APG and my H just got out of the army 2 years ago. He got his CDLs with his gi bill and drives a truck now. There's a few of my coworkers that commute from Newark, DE. I'm in North East, MD and only 10 miles from the DE border.

  • Thanks. He's looked at usajobs there are a few things, but tough with his skill set. Unfortunately my husband jumped out of airplanes instead of getting any practical training in the army! Lol. He is looking in to va police at Dover and a few others. He is being medically retired but coinciding with his 20 years anyway. Currently he is using his gi bill for his BA, but the va offered job training, I will have him look into CDL. Thanks!
  • Ok ladies, we just got back from our whirlwind tour and I have narrowed it down to middletown or Odessa! Love the areas! Thanks for all the tips so far one more question, any areas in those towns that have some nice ranch homes not in a development? My parents will be following us out of jersey!
  • Keep an eye on Realtor.com. They have houses like that pop up all the time.

We just moved back to Townsend a few weeks ago and the neighborhood we are in is a few minutes from Odessa. We are in Odessa National and absolutley love it. The Middletown area is limited in the housing market right now unless you want to pay out the nose for a newer house.

  • There's definitely a lot of trucking jobs in the area. I think H said there's 30 some loads per truck right now. The need for drivers is crazy. He's working 13 of 14 days right now. He delivers groceries and this is the busy season. Your H might have to be gone a few nights a week until he gets his experience up to 1-2 years.

That would be awesome if the VA offered it. H had to change his major to transportation management to get the gi bill to cover it. Idk how that would affect your Hs current ba.

  • That's a great idea! Because he is a disabled vet I think they offered him career training for free in whatever area would be suitable and trucking would be just fine! Thanks for the insight. Any specific companies I can look up online?
