WIJFR- The Martian by Andy Weir

So I wasn't super excited about The Martian. I borrowed it from the library because I heard good things here at NBC and figured it would be decent but sci fi and space aren't really my thing. Also, I typically don't like books written as diary entries.
And then I started the book.
And it was amazing!
Seriously, this was probably the best book I've read so far this year. I read it in less than 24 hours because I literally couldn't put it down.
The writing is witty and funny and Mark is lovable and beautifully flawed.
I think my husband will love this book just as much and am excited for him to read it.

  • YES!  I am not a sci fi reader at all but this book was awesome.  I did skim some of the chemistry stuff because I just didn't understand it but I loved this book.  I laughed out loud so many times!

  • LOVED! LOVED! LOVED!

Thanks for the rec, I just adored this book. Mark is one of my all time favorite book characters, and this was definitely one of my very favorite reads this year.

Do y'all think they'll turn this into a movie?

  • If they turn this into a movie, my heart my just explode.  I was so anxious reading the book that condensing it to 2 hours might be overload on my senses.

Of course I'll see it though.

  • I know, right?!?!? I was so nervous reading the book. I felt like the kid from The Neverending Story, I was SO invested in the story. I cried, I laughed, I lost years off my life.

  • It's being made into a movie! Ridley Scott is apparently going to direct it and Matt Damon will be playing Mark!

  • OF COURSE it would be Ridley Scott.  It can't possibly be anyone else. This book was practically written for him to direct it.

  • A movie? I kind of imagined a young Tom Hanks looking guy as Mark. But I guess he's already done space and the whole alone for most of the movie thing (Wilson!) so I could see Matt Damon.

  • I read something that said Andy Weir had said he wanted Bradley Cooper to play Mark because he thought he could pull off the nerdy parts well. Once I got that picture in my head I have had a hard time picturing Matt Damon, but I'll hold judgement until I see it.

  • Oh! I love Bradley Cooper for this role. I think he has the right amount of snark. I can't wait to watch this on the screen! I'll likely bite through all my nails, but I can't wait!
