Going to the obgyn tomorrow and discussing ttc-any suggested questions?

We have just decided to ttc. I am excited, I think lol, but I am also scared to death. I called to schedule an appointment with my obgyn and they just had a cancellation for tomorrow morning, so this is moving quickly lol. Do you guys have any suggestions on questions I should ask? We have tried in the past, only for a few months several years ago, but we had no luck.

Re: Going to the obgyn tomorrow and discussing ttc-any suggested questions?

  • Your OB-GYN will really just tell you some basic info. They're not in the business of getting women pregnant, just taking care of them once they get there!

It can take a healthy couple up to 1 year to conceive. A few months of trying with no result is nothing to worry about.

Start paying attention to your cycles, if you want to. If you have very regular cycles, that's great and makes timing ST easier around your fertile window. If it's been a few months and you want to do more, you can start charting (www.fertilityfriend.com) by using OPKs and taking your basal temp (FFs FAQs have tons of great info on starting to chart; it's not nearly as intimidating as you'd think). Charting really helped me, because I don't have regular cycles, so I need the temp spike after ovulation to confirm it had happened and start to figure out when in my cycle I usually ovulated.

Obviously, your doc will tell you to try to cut out limit unhealthy things (especially alcohol, or smoking if you do that). Starting to take a prenatal vitamin now is a great idea, since the development of a fetus really utilizes some of those vitamins (especially folic acid) before you can even know you're pregnant.

And stick around here! The ladies are a wealth of information. Good luck!

  • Pretty much everything lucky angel said. If you just want to see what happens the first couple of months and have fun with it, that's totally ok. If it takes a bit longer the resources she cited are very helpful! Some people like to chart right away others don't.

I would also add that taking. Prenatal with DHA is suggested now.

Good luck with everything! Stick around and tell is a little more about yourself!
  • I agree with the PP's above!

Take your time, enjoy the journey. It's all about having fun and if you are interested in charting your cycles then the website Lucky gave you is great!

    Good luck!!

Completely normal to be scared! Don't worry about it. If you've both discussed it and are ready, then go for it! The fear will probably never fully go away, but just because you're nervous about something doesn't mean you shouldn't go for it. ;)

  • Thanks so much luckyangel!
  • I would ask your doctor about carrier testing for common genetic conditions. If it is something you are interested in pursuing it is really ideal to do it before getting pregnant. There are different recommendations for testing that should be offered based on your ethnic background. For example approximately 1 out 25 caucasians are a carrier of a genetic change for cystic fibrosis (your chances might be higher if you have a family history of CF). Usually the mom-to-be is tested first. If a mutation is identified then the father would be tested to get a better understanding about the chance of having an affected child.

    Good luck!
