Not MM at all. But the tech board is slllooowww. So, I'm not tech-savvy. I can do pretty well, but I need help figuring something out.
We have a PC in our basement and a laptop on the main level. DH is getting a Surface due to his job. How can we interface our photos, files, etc. and still have them be private and secure? We have WiFi at home. And, Smart Phones (iPhones 5S-C).
I want to be able to upload our Smart Phone pics to save them on another device, but be able to access them on the PC and/or laptop so I can be anywhere in the house to make my Shutterfly albums. I also want to have our Excel spreadsheets for finance managing accessible across devices. Also, all our major files are saved to the hard drive of the PC, and that's it - no backup. YIKES! So, I want something I can use to back up too. What do I set up that can do this for me?
I do not want outside companies to have access to my files (as some are confidential) so I am looking for some kind of closed network, I suppose.
TIA!
Re: NMMR: Home File Sharing?
@MommyLiberty5013 - what you're trying to get to is the setup I have at home. We have a 1TB harddrive that is connected to our wireless network and shared with our two laptops and our tablet. We're able to download and upload documents, pics, etc.
I asked DH about it and he said you would either need to get a NAS drive (network attached storage) or have a router that would allow you to plug in a USB hard drive to store everything you want to save. As to how to actually install all that I'm not positive but I did find instructions on Microsoft's website that might help. It says it's for Windows 7 but the basic instructions on how to hook everything up should work for earlier (and later) versions of windows. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/setting-home-network#1TC=windows-7
Hope this helps as a starting point at least, it's really convenient to have - DH has something like 10,000 music files or some crazy number like that and we're able to store all of it on our network drive so it doesn't eat up all the space on our computers and we can both access it.

Thanks. I saw this on Amazon. Would this be like what your DH said? What do you guys use?
I just asked him and he said the NAS we use is a Buffalo LinkStation, similar to this one: http://www.amazon.com/Buffalo-LinkStation-Personal-Storage-LS210D0201/dp/B00JKM0A36/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1407427346&sr=8-10&keywords=NAS+DRIVE
He said Western Digital's MyCloud series is supposed to be a good too, something like this:

He said Qnap, the one you linked to, is a good brand but runs on the expensive side compared to some of the other brands and he believes they tend to be geared towards more advanced users, where the WD and Buffalo brands are easier to set up and configure for home network users.
