WWYD

Earlier this summer it seemed like Todd was waking up dry most mornings. So after our camping trip we talked to him about wearing regular underwear to bed and he agreed.

Ten days straight he woke up dry. Then 5 of the last 10 days he has woken up wet. :-(

I realize that this is totally normal and we can’t “teach” him to stay dry all night (I’m pretty sure he sleeps to deeply to wake up to pee, because he doesn’t wake up in the middle of the night when he’s wet.) I’m just trying to figure out how long to keep the experiment going or if there is anything we can do. He has to use the potty before bed and we discourage him from drinking much after dinner.

Signed,
Tired of doing extra laundry and sharing my morning shower time

Re: WWYD

  • Mason is the same.  Unfortunately, I don't have any successful suggestions...we tried for a while sending him to bed in underwear/going potty before bed/limiting water/etc., but I just gave up.  I can't think of anything I would rather do less than having to wash pee soaked sheets and pajamas, or being woken up in the middle of the night because he is wet, so we went back to diapers.  I wish I could totally be done with diapers, but buying diapers is the lesser of the two evils for me.

I would go back to using pull-ups or whatever you were using at night because as you stated, you can't "teach him to stay dry at night".  Especially since he's not even waking up after he pees.

I think summer is especially draining for kids and all the activity amplifies the deepness f their sleep.  I know mine are outside all day long, and DD who very rarely has nighttime accidents during the cooler months has had more than usual over the summer.

Do you think Todd will be upset if you have him go back to pull-ups?  I can't imagine he enjoys waking up in a pee soaked bed.

ETA: I would try again after he has a long stretch of waking up dry.

  • I don't have any first hand experience, but I do have some friends dealing with this.  They were told by their pedi that it's developmental and there's really not much you can do.  The age that kids reach that mark varies from kid to kid.

  • I agree with Meghan, I would go back to pullups. Right around the time EJ potty trained, she was waking dry. I figured we would just finish the box we had and then maybe be done. Well just as we were nearing the end of the box she woke soaked.  And continued to wet heavily overnight for months. So we stuck with the pullups until she had a similarly long streak of dryness. After that we really only had a few accidents overnight (like maybe 3-4 over the next year). The only other alternitive I can come up with is right before you go to sleep, wake Todd to go to the bathroom one more time.  But even still that is no guarentee he will 1. fall back to sleep quickly or 2. wake up dry.
  • Brody still wears pull ups to bed.  He goes through waves where I think maybe he's finally gotten it...and then it goes back to him being wet and sometimes he's so wet that he pees through the pull up.  I like my sleep way too much to worry about changing sheets/pj's in the middle of the night.

Noah was the same way.  He was still having accidents (not as consistently...maybe once a month or so) well in to first grade.  By then he was wearing undies because it was less frequent, but some kids it just takes time.  (And I've also heard it takes longer for boys)

I posted not that long ago about dd having overnight accidents. I agree with pp that with summer and activities they are sleeping harder and having trouble waking up. I think that's what happened with dd. Things have settled down with activities and she has been fine overnight.

I'd probably go back to pull-ups if he is ok with it. Dd is so way past that that it wasn't an option but I did start looking into the Good nights underwear options and was thinking if getting some.

I'd just keep up the same thing with if you get x amount of nights in a row dry we can try underwear again and just see how it goes.

  • Just adding to the discussion here that my 7-yr old still has overnight accidents. He was wearing pull-ups at night until Christmas (6.5 yrs) because he was wetting every night. We did away with them in December because the 3.5 yr old who was waking up dry every morning - we went cold turkey for both. Since then, Conall has had maybe 5 accidents. Gavin, has had quite a few. He finally went through a long dry spell and as soon as we moved him out of the bunk bed and into his own room (into a queen-sized bed), he had 4 wet nights in a row. Talk about a pain doing that laundry every day!

So, I feel your pain! However, I agree with the others - just go back to pull-ups until he has another 5 or 7-day stretch. I think, as the others have said, the summer, the heat, drinking more throughout the day... all plays a big factor. I can cut out fluids for 3 hrs before bed, make him go right before bed and all, and he will still soak! Hang in there!

    My three sons!

  • Thanks for all of your input. It helps to hear about older kids. R seems reluctant to go back to bedtime underwear for some reason, but I'm going to track Todd's progress for another week or so. I can deal with washing his sheets a couple times a month, but every other day is not reasonable...

  • The power of whining on the nest still works! He's woken up dry for 7 straight days. :-)
