Things you have missed in the budget?

Just realized today we owe $60 to renew our PO box. I haven't budgeted for it and I am kind of irritated with myself for over looking something we use on almost a daily basis!

Anything you have ever missed from your budget?

Re: Things you have missed in the budget?

  • Oh man, when we had a PO Box I missed it every. single. time.

I often forget hair cuts and oil changes. This week I forgot the fees required to change our cars and licenses over to our new state. ( @smbenevides1989‌, if you ever move here, be warned that this is a long and difficult process!)
  • When we started budgeting we forgot to allow for homeowners insurance, car insurance and real estate taxes- basically anything we paid once a year. That sucked!

  • I was constantly forgetting once a year fees - AAA, Costco, Amazon prime membership, life insurance premiums, etc.  I finally sat down and tried to remember everything that's a once-a-year payment.  I added it all up, divided by 12, and now I send $55/month to this dinky savings account I'm required to have in order to keep my checking account free.  Then when those things pop up I don't even have to think about it.

  • I always forgot the once a year fees. Now I do what PP mentioned. I set up a separate account for those things and pay as the bill is due
  • I always forget the synagogue dues. I realize most of you don't go to synagogue, but money you give to your church or temple or any other charity of that matter.

    Other possibilities:
    Country Club dues
    Membership dues
    Kid's sports, lessons or dance
Kid's school stuff like supplies and field trips
    Magazine subscriptions
    Wedding or Birthday Gifts

That is what we do.  I add up all of our once a year payments and divide by 12 as well.  Unfortunately I end up putting 460 away in our separate account each month.

Is it the taxes/insurance on your house?  We will be escrowing that, otherwise ours would be about the same!

I actually remembered an annual due that I had forgotten about a couple days ago... and now I can't remember what it is.  Sigh.  I'm less than a year into my plan to save monthly, so as things I've forgotten pop up over the next year I'll just have to deal with it and adjust our amount.

I've always been intimidated by the math involved in doing this, but perhaps it's time. I do put away for my quarterlys, and we will for our homeowners' too (our bank doesn't escrow it for whatever reason).

Oh I've heard. I'm not looking forward to it, and I know they will be raising the prices of anything car related taxes because they removed the controversial toll on the Sakonnet River Bridge (stupid 10 cent toll that was only electronic) so I know the registration and inspections are going up big time. At least you won't have to worry about inspections for 2 years.

  • Because I teach dance as an independent contractor H and I make quarterly estimated tax payments, I have a calculator for that in our budget spreadsheet, so I put it in savings every month.

I often forget about the one-time fees, this year I underestimated how much it would be to register my car (I think town taxes went up more than I thought). we also have a safety deposit box at the bank that's like $25/year, I always forget about that one.

Yep.  Our house is paid off so we have to pay property taxes and home owners insurance still.  Our yearly account includes - auto insurance, life insurance, home owners ins, property taxes on house and cars, home assoc. dues, personal property ins (my instruments and our wedding rings).

This was the last post I replied to last night before I went to bed and I ended up having a dream last night that we forgot to budget for xmas.  That is the 1 thing every year I forget to budget for.  I really need to do that!  we will be buying for less people this year - sticking with very immediate family and since we are both only children that makes it really easy.

  • I always forget about the $40 recharge on my iPass for our tollways.  Never know when it's going to come, and I'm horrible at tracking how much is left on it online.  So it just charges to our account and they we add it in at that time.

We pay our insurance monthly since our company doesn't offer a discount for paid in full. :-(
We also use our tax return to pay for property taxes.
The only other annual expenses would be our 1/4th of a cow in November for $700, life insurance in February, and our pig in March/April for $450.  We just cash flow those within that month so we don't have to separate it out into 12 months.

My bank does this program called the Christmas Club. It starts from the last week of October and goes for 52 weeks. You just send money into it however you want, and you earn interest on that money. They then send you a check (which I believe is a $2 fee) or they will transfer it to another account for free. I've been doing this for two years and it helps me budget $10/week for that account. I also only have to buy for 7 kids this year since Disney is a big enough gift for the adults Once October rolls around, I will be contributing $20/week.

I don't forget about excise tax, but I just wait for it to come in the mail before I budget for it. I do forget about BJ's and AAA, but its because I wait for my dad to let me know when the membership is up for renewal (I'm under their plans).

Yup, I forgot that too last year. I have readjusted my transportation budget to include those things along with gas, maintenance, etc.
  • Oh, need to remember to add that to the budget for September!!!
    image
  • What we try to do is add enough a month to our housing, emergency fund, semi-annual savings account to cover the rare bills.  Some of our larger ones come due around tax time so we also use our tax return to pay these bills.

What I really need to add to our budget is my SAE membership dues and some more into our gift/vacation/child to cover preschool and our new cell phone plan.
