Would you take a pay cut?
Hi all...I'm having a predicament right now with my job situation and I wanted to get some advice. My current job pays me 50k/year. I hate it. I've been miserable and bored for almost every single day of the almost 4 years that I've been there. I don't even like talking about it. I've been trying to find a job in a slightly different field but still related enough for my experience to be relevant.
I came across a job I am overqualified for and will pay less. The max salary of the position is 43k/year. The reason I am even considering it is that once I get my feet wet, there is potential for me to make upwards of 60k or higher later on whereas in my current job there is no mobility. I've been interested in getting into the new field for over 2 years and taking this lower paying job seems to be the only way. It will also cut my 70 minute commute down to 50. However along with the 7k drop in salary, some of the benefits aren't quite as good as my current company. They're still good, just not as good. I don't think I would accept it if the offer is less than 43k.
H and I just bought a condo and have a car payment but both are well within our means. It will put a slight damper on our goals to pay off debt faster though. Am I crazy for considering this? Should I wait until a better job comes my way? I'm not even sure if I'll get the job but it is looking promising so i would like to be level headed about it if i so get an offer. WWMMD?

Re: Would you take a pay cut?
If you're that worried about not getting your debt paid off as quickly as you'd like, I'd also look for something part time or on the side. (My H makes money reselling sporting and event tickets occasionally.)
Life is too short to be miserable day in, and day out.
I can't tell by your post if you've had in interview yet or not, but I would really check into it, it doesn't hurt. Maybe you can get a little more money. If you can afford to take the cut and you are sure there is growth, then go for it. You could always keep looking in the meantime.
I myself took a pay cut to get into my current job, but there were many more benefits. I was miserable just like you, but the new job (current job) is a 10 minute commute, better/cheaper benefits and the co-workers are great! My cut was only $3000, but I may have panicked it were anything less.

Go for it!
H took a pay cut this year to leave an office and go back to teaching at a private school. We argued about it because all he saw were numbers but once he stated thinking about how happy he was and how much happier we were when he was teaching he didn't hesatatie to accept the offer. It is hindering our goals a bit but it is completely worth it.

It took me 4 months to find a new job that was paying a lot less then what I was making but I was a lot happier and they taught me a skill that I needed.
I agree that quality of life is important. You might negotiate anyway since it doesn't hurt to ask.
Hi all,
Thank you again for all of your helpful advice! So the interview went SO well, I found out last week that they offered me the job AND gave me 2k higher than their original max salary. It's still pay cut but I will be very happy there. So excited! Gave my notice yesterday.
Nice, congrats!!
