Intro & Job Advice

Hi everyone. I've been a lurker for several months and decided to post for some advice. Also, the 9 to 5 board is not as active.

My H and I are both 28. H has a job that doesn't offer benefits and I haven't worked in over a year. H does okay and we pay all of our bills, but since I don't have a job, it doesn't allow us to do much. Plus, our income is different every month. Over the past year I, with the help of my sister, been taking care of my aunt with Parkinson's. We are getting to the point where we need to hire a professional caregiver. I am hoping to get back into the job market, but I don't know where to start.  I have a bachelors in communications. I have about 2 years job experience in advertising. The problem is I hated it.  My last job, I was laid off because a new boss took over and brought in his own people.

If I wanted another job in advertising I would have to move out of state. (That's really not an option right now because of my aunt needs us here.) Before that I worked at a radio station doing sales and news for a very small market. That job was pretty awful too because the owners were going through a divorce, but I did it for a year and half.

I went to a networking event alone last week, and I got hit on by some guy! I got upset and left because I was so uncomfortable there. I had a career service look over my resume and they told me it looked great other than not having a job over the past year. I've also done volunteer work but nothing ever seems to pan out.

The problem is I've never had a job I loved and one I've been good at. I really don't want to do anything in sales again. I don't want to go back to school because I'm not really sure we can afford that right now, plus my grades were never really that great and I struggled in classes. Any words of wisdom would be apprciated. I just feel defeated. Thanks.

Re: Intro & Job Advice

  • Welcome to the board.
I don't really have much in the way for advice other than to say to look at the classifieds and apply for anything that sounds interesting. It seems like the last 2 jobs you hated were difficult because of the situation, so maybe you just need to find a company that is a little better for it's employees. Are there any non-profits or any organizations you are interested in that may need to do some marketing? Maybe even being a contractor for a couple small companies where you do the work when they need it would be an option. Not a very steady stream of income, and may take a while to build up a client base, but it may be an idea.
If you were to find the perfect job- what would you see that being? That may help you decide what direction you need to go while applying and looking.
So far as the networking event, in the future- don't let that bother you (I know that's easy for me to say). People can be jerks anywhere. He wasn't being very professional and I'm sure that was picked up on by others, but that's no reason to let it ruin your chances of making the right connection.

Good luck! I'm sure you will get more advice on here come monday- the weekends can be a tad slow.

  • So sorry about your aunt. My aunt recently passed away from Parkinson's. I think she also had demintia with it. She was in a retirement home and then a nursing home. It was so sad to see her failing.

  • Welcome! I'm also sorry about your aunt.

On the job front, the good news is that your advertising background should give you lots of transferable skills. What I would probably do in your position is sign up with a temp agency. In our area they are pretty active, and my friends who have used them have had pretty constant work. This will allow you to try some different things out and get your bearings.

How do you feel about customer service work? In my area banks are often hiring, and there seems to be decent upward mobility. I'll also second nonprofits-I'm in that sector and see a ton of positions for people with marketing backgrounds and social media skills. It's tough work, but rewarding.
  • Hello, I hope you're doing very well!

You know when I started my business I was SO LOST! All that big words confused me so much, I know what is like to need advice from someone; so here's mine for moms that start a business:
It's called How to turn the complicate into something simple.

I hope someone would find it useful, I know it was for me :)
